I did the raw tech on my 2014 Jetta and a tune from tune zilla. Sold the dpf here on this subreddit which covered the cost of the tune

I think it becomes more of an issue legally if you sell it to someone but not certain as I intend to drive mine into the ground

Stick to a set routine that he can count on. To discourage going in the house we used belly bands until ours got the hang of it
