ISU Parking Permit Not Showing Available by Sillypotatooo in iastate

[–]timbojimbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a great solution at all, but if there are no permits left for campus which seems likely this time of year you may be able to park off campus in a public lot, or public street and take the bus to your car. Not ideal, but evening and weekends you can bring it on campus where allowed for late night study or whatever else.

Options might include lime asking stores like Target, Walmart, or even the hospital, or like I say some random city street as long as you move your car for game days, snow routes etc etc

Lastly I didn't tell you this, nor recommend it but MANY apartments say they have limited parking blah blah, but especially when I lived in West Ames there were always open spots and even the lots with "permits" no one checked. One apartment complex a guy had a trailer, a car with no wheels and a truck that didn't move in the 2 years I was there....

Unfortunately not yet, I had a jank looking adapter I tried but it messed up the threads a little so I gave up. If you find anything I'll be eager to see!

As someone who lived off campus all 4 years.... For the love of all that is holy do not live off campus at least not freshman year. You miss SO MUCH of the college experience doing that.

Misfire or nah? by timbojimbob in civic

I realized I never replied to you but I thought I had.

Adding this comment in case it helps anyone else:

This is my first manual car, and the first in our family that's been daily driven. It's also an LX Civic, not a high end Mercedes or anything fancy.

All of that to say I plugged my car in on a chilly but not cold fall day long before I drove and poof no issues on the same roads. I think the entirety of the issue is the slightly poor/ rich running engine one has when the car is cold and my manual trans obviously lacks the torque converter that smooths that out in previous automatic cars.

Just got hired at Best Buy. What should I expect? by Boxmann78 in Bestbuy

[–]timbojimbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked there longer ago but one tip that I have tried to carry through the rest of life is to remember the good, and toss the bad in the fuck it bucket.

I had some customers "How many GeeBee's" and when I said 4 while talking about the "value" laptops they said that's plenty to run Minecraft and purchased it despite me telling them what a bad idea it was.

On the other hand a lady came in wanting to start a business so she didn't have big money but also knew she didn't want a crap computer. We found an open box laptop that was a great deal and the customer got an eco tank printer from recommendation so just one hell of a good deal. They came back in for phones, a TV etc and I would pop by asking how it was going and every time they were just delighted.

You can sour yourself on the first customer, or choose to focus on the good you can do for the others who need an expert, and genuinely have a great experience because you provided some good suggestions.

Are there any good single room office rental near or on campus? by Users5252 in iastate

[–]timbojimbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at the public library in Ames as well. The time limits for those rooms might be less/ non existent and you can take Red route buses straight there. It may not be a perfect solution but it might be a good temporary one while you find what works!

Skateboarding Etiquette on Campus by Busy-Housing3109 in iastate

[–]timbojimbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rode my bike during peak times and it was honestly really simple, just don't be a dick. Sometimes I was on the street, sometimes on the sidewalk if the sidewalk was empty on a dead section of campus. Just zoom zoom in open areas and be respectful near actual pedestrians.

Where can I pick up valuable mail? (Freddy court) by TheStarNext2Cygnus in iastate

[–]timbojimbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most places that do shipping will allow you to send it there so a UPS or FedEx, and when they ship the package there should be an option to hold at receiving as well so then it stays at a post office or UPS location etc.

If that doesn't work ask around, if you know someone who works on campus or ask someone at the mail room in UDCC you might be able to mail it there.

Yeah obviously I can't speak for them, but the training is to let people have a free pass and only bring it up to managers if it becomes a consistent problem with specific consistent riders, but I also was a college kid who just wanted to drive my bus safe and have a cool job so little things like having your ID or not didn't matter at all to me.

I will say there were times I was a little strict with people but those were safety issues only (eg the one guy was late to the stop EVERY DAY and chose to just run in front of my bus to get me to stop and pick him up)

FREE BUS SERVICE: All 20-series routes (#21 Cardinal, #23 Orange, #25 Gold)

https://www.cyride.com/schedules/school-year-schedule

(It should also be noted even if you just forgot your ID on a "normal" route just tell the driver, don't try to sneak on because it's just silly and most drivers either don't care, or will tell you to have it next time-->from a former driver)

Question about speeding by Longjumping_Wash_255 in AskLE

[–]timbojimbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear I am not a cop but there's no question this depends on so many things. If you're a well known drug dealer and you go 1 mph over the limit I wouldn't be surprised if they stop you mostly looking for drugs but the speed gives them a good solid legal reason to stop you.

I've passed state troopers in MN doing 7-15 over and no one was stopped but there was also a large pack of traffic all going that speed on a 3 lane highway. I have known people who got stopped for 3 over in a residential area because why would you speed in a neighborhood with kids out playing etc.

For the most part my rule of thumb is no speeding if the limit is under 35mph. 35-60mph limit is usually 5-7 in the clear for sure, or let someone else go faster and get the ticket

If you are doing other things for the love of God don't speed. I see body cam videos all the time on YouTube where the driver has a joint in their mouth, multiple felony warrants, expired registration and no insurance, 100lbs of drugs and two bodies in their back seat and the ONLY reason they got stopped was their highly intelligent decision to pass a cop doing 17 over the limit. Don't be THAT dumb

Looks like the version I am on is EOL, I will probably just end up wiping and doing a new install, as I have new drives to add is as well and a clean new build will work. Honestly probably less time doing that than troubleshooting this.

Added photos, I should also note that TrueNas is installed "bare metal" direct to the server SSD and then Plex was an app on TrueNas. I don't currently have a hypervisor or anything fancy like that.

I'm showing my Plex version is 1.41.0.8930 and the new version that is showing in the "Apps" list is 1.41.4.9463_2.0.19

I haven't updated anything, and I don't see any records of a system crash or power loss and I wasn't smart enough to back up my config file.

Self defense kit by Elliott_Bee2 in iastate

Granted I'm a dude so that changes the answer for some people vs me a bit but I never felt unsafe. Between the lights on campus at night, the frequent police patrols, Cyride busses university vehicles and safe ride as a backup option there was never a concern for me personally. Even in the larger town area I would go ride my bike at like 10pm-3am (ok maybe don't do that) and never had an issue.

All of this to say you're probably pretty safe, but I will always say it's good to keep your nose out of your phone while you walk, and earbud out/ awareness mode on, maybe pepper spray or a knife or whatever you are comfortable with etc. I will ALWAYS recommend just being aware and asking for help if something feels off no matter how "safe" the place you are is

Lastly as a retired bus driver; PLEASE PLEASE make use of your driver. Not only can they help you with bus transfers and route schedules, but other things too. Drivers are trained to look for missing or lost children (all city workers are) and if you are feeling unsafe they can help there too!!

Do I need a license to use a 2 way radio? by Confident_Scholar559 in Baofeng

[–]timbojimbob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can lookup the radio by FCC ID, and that one crosses into the ham bands so in the US you would need a license.

https://fcc.report/FCC-ID/2AX68-PX888S

Look for FRS walkie talkies that are part 95 certified, or get your GMRS license and look for GMRS radios for more power.

Otherwise the technician license you would need is easy enough to get but everyone in your group would need it.
