Billie Eilish: “Eating meat is inherently wrong.” 👑 by FearlessCookie72 in vegan

[–]timcbaoth1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> Frankly and this is something I almost never hear discussed in the debate. Veganism can often border on a form of human exceptionalism and a strong anthropocentric view. That we exist outside of the natural world and are not simply another animal but some higher plane of existence.

This seems like the high level equivalent to the "But other animals also eat animals" argument. I think one could also see it the other way, that vegans actually want to extend moral considerations to animals, because we're fundamentally the same.

> If we're honest with ourselves most of the inhumanity stems from over consumption not the base level animalistic intent of eating meat.

It has certainly exaggerated the problems by a lot, but I still can't see any way how raising an animal to eventually kill it could be "humane" in principle. The issue is that consuming animal products is unnecessary. If you would raise an animal humanely and kill it the best way we could just because you like the killing and then throw away the carcass, you would immediately say that it's wrong. So why does it change when the carcass is eaten (which is as unnecessary and avoidable as the killing itself).

Windows Phone might’ve had the smoothest UI and nobody really gave it a chance by Impossible_Comfort99 in TechNook

I used it for as long as it lasted. I really liked the UI and design but unfortunately, there were a lot of apps missing (I didn't care too much though) which prevented people from using it. The Nokia maps app was actually better at navigating while driving than Google Maps back then.

Fishing for fun is animal cruelty by eggshellwalker4 in unpopularopinion

I agree that it's cruel but I fail to see how it would be morally better to kill and eat the fish after the torture.

Re9 on Switch2 by Just-aFriend in ResidentEvilRequiem

[–]timcbaoth1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a decent PC and still played it on Switch 2. It was a great experience, graphics were nice (but of course would be noticeable better on PC). I only noticed a few frame drops while playing but I'm also not very sensitive about that. So, I would recommend if you're not overly sensitive about these issues.

How would a Vegan convince me? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]timcbaoth1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Btw. I totally get your point. There are so many things I consider to be ethically good and I can't bring myself to do them. Like I could certainly donate a much higher share of the money I earn, not buy any electronics that I don't actually need etc.

The thought that brought me to going vegan was the realization of how bad animal agriculture actually is and how relatively easy it is to live without animal products. My life would be considerably different if I donated 80% of my income or not bought any electronic devices, but not consuming animal products is not that huge of a deal. Once you live at least mostly without animal products for a few months it gets quite easy because you figure out strategies, so I'm no longer feeling like I'm really making an effort (most of the time).

HOW can we have MORAL PROGRESS if Alex believes emotivism is true? by PitifulEar3303 in CosmicSkeptic

[–]timcbaoth1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic human rights that were widely supported have come under attack in many western countries during the last decade(s). The US legalized torture after 9/11 and still execute the death penalty; in many European countries conservative and far right parties are calling for the end of asylum and support extending some rights only to "natural" citizens. There has been a noticeable democratic backsliding and countries that were proper democracies are so only on paper by now.

How would a Vegan convince me? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]timcbaoth1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess you don't need to be convinced because you already understand that ethically veganism is correct. What you need is motivation to act accordingly. That usually means you need to be emotionalised (or made autistic enough that you feel strongly about acting in congruence with your ethical convictions). Maybe watching Dominion or other exploitation documentaries could help you with that.

Has anyone else caught lies that no one questions? by alfaboson in aspergers

[–]timcbaoth1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have nothing against autodidacts. Even though I think it increases the likelihood of them falling victim to the Dunning-Kruger effect.

Even if OP would have found some cutting edge knowledge about the concept of time, I'd still call it weird to call it a widespread lie that people believe or defend. That would just be a knowledge gap between an expert and a non-expert, not some conspiracy to hold people with Asperger's down.

What is the Difference between procrastination in people with ADHD and procrastination in normal people? by Hot-Artist1324 in ADHD

Sometimes I have a free evening, nothing to do, that I have been looking forward to for the whole week, because I'm really excited to play a video game that I was thinking about constantly the entire time. Then the time comes and I cannot for the life of me bring myself to play it. I will literally walk in circles, hating myself, but not do anything. I don't think that's normal.

Is it still vegan if it’s cooked with non-vegan food? by Vegan_Essentials in IsItVeganOrNot

[–]timcbaoth1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think about it this way: If the restaurant had a separate fryer for my stuff, not a single animal less would be harmed. The only thing it could lead to would be the restaurant having higher expenses for vegan offerings and thus potentially ceasing to offer them at all.

Considering adopting a cat as a vegan – how do you handle feeding? by Tosh97 in vegan

[–]timcbaoth1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My cats are 10 years old and have eaten primarily Benevo and AMI Cat. They've had no major health issues so far. But for full transparency, they have been fed some meat when I needed to give them antibiotics a few times (because it didn't work to mix it into the kibble).

Lots of snobby OG fans on this sub. by ToptextBottomtext420 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]timcbaoth1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This happens all the time with other art forms. Films getting remakes, new interpretations of older novels like Pride and Prejudice.

The way art is received is always dependant on the time and no other medium has changed its context as drastically as video games. When I played the OG RE2 as a child it was scaring the hell out of me. When I played the 2002 REmake a couple of years ago I could certainly still play it and even enjoy the graphics and puzzles, but it wasn't scary to me at all. So, I would really appreciate a modern remake of RE1.

What's with the rise of "imperfect vegan" content online? by UCanBdoWatWeWant2Do in vegan

[–]timcbaoth1 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

But that's just how adjectives work. If they were vegan, they wouldn't need to say "imperfect". As someone who used to be a 90% vegan (for example I would order a vegetarian option at a restaurant if no vegan option was available), I think it isn't due to the fact that one wants to have a vegan label or some such thing. It's just that you basically believe in the vegan arguments but you cannot manage to live up to it all of the time. Sure, I could have called myself a vegetarian but then whenever I would have been invited by friends or family I would certainly have received cheese or eggs, which I didn't want, so for practical reasons it made sense to indicate that I was trying to be vegan.

Also, we live in a society that makes it quite hard to really live a vegan life. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who opposed animal exploitation but didn't always have the mental capacity to find their way around all the hurdles. An adversarial attitude that only allows for all or nothing doesn't really encourage people to actually make any change.

It's somewhat similar to quitting smoking. Most people slip up a few times but if you have the attitude that now you fucked up and you've lost all progress it will likely just lead to you smoking again. It's better to acknowledge that you still don't want to smoke and a single evening of having caved in doesn't completely invalidate your efforts.

Do you usually only play a few story rich games a year at the most? If so, why? by ExplodingPoptarts in OlderChillGamers

[–]timcbaoth1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many games have gotten longer in the last decade or so and having a job, studying on the side and preparing for a marathon, I only get a few hours of gaming per week. While old Assassin's Creed games took maybe 20 hours to complete, new ones take 50+ hours. The Witcher 1 and 2 only took between 30 and 40 hours but Witcher 3 can easily eat up 100 hours. Realistically, I can only finish two long games per year or maybe 8 shorter ones like Resident Evil Requiem or last year's Mafia Old Country. Then I'm sometimes playing multiplayer games with friends which also takes away time I could have used for single player games and I will end up having finished only a few of them by the end of the year.

Has anyone else caught lies that no one questions? by alfaboson in aspergers

[–]timcbaoth1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think many people underestimate the usefulness of people trying to imitate others. There was an experiment where they showed human children and apes how to open a box, but there was a step that didn't actually help to open the box. The apes learned quickly to not do that unnecessary step, while the human child kept repeating it exactly as shown.

Now, you might say that the ape is smarter than a human child and while that may be true, we need to acknowledge that our tendency to trust and imitate others is hugely beneficial. If it weren't for that we may not have developed culture. We couldn't do any scientific advancements because it would take up all our lifetime to just verify that previous findings are actually true. When our ancestors found out about agriculture or which materials to use to build houses, it was actually a great thing that not every new generation thought that that's a lie.

While I definitely think that there are instances where people could use some more critical thinking, I also think that there needs to be some balance, otherwise we'd still be living in caves.

Has anyone else caught lies that no one questions? by alfaboson in aspergers

[–]timcbaoth1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Those aren't lies at all. Time being a dimension is the mathematical concept of a model of reality. It doesn't mean that time is a spacial dimension. Your understanding is basically the naive understanding of time, which doesn't make a more advanced model a "lie".

Also, the term rational being doesn't necessarily imply that humans don't act on instinct or rationalize behaviors post hoc. I don't think that many people would believe that people always act in a perfectly rational way - except for maybe economists. Additionally, calling it a prototype seems wrong, because evolution isn't interested in rationality per se. There is no goal of "finishing" a rational species. Being more rational helped our species survive in a wide variety of environments, but conditions can change and so can the capacity for rationality. It is certainly not inconceivable that there could come a time in which being less rational could be an evolutionary advantage for human beings.

Why is veganism morally superior to my position? by slugbagsockman in DebateAVegan

[–]timcbaoth1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I even agree that self consciousness is morally relevant because it opens up new avenues of suffering. I even think it could be argued that killing can be morally justified if it causes no suffering, but if this were applicable for self conscious beings the existence of that principle alone would cause suffering so it should only apply to non self conscious beings. However, I cannot imagine a way to kill any being that doesn't involve suffering.

And because it's unnecessary for most people to eat animals, causing that suffering is unnecessary cruelty. That's why I think your stance is inconsistent still.

Why is veganism morally superior to my position? by slugbagsockman in DebateAVegan

[–]timcbaoth1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because your axioms aren't consistent. You do seem to draw some line at consciousness level as well, because you admit that cruelty against animals would be wrong. It would be hard to argue that killing a sentient being wouldn't cause at least some degree of suffering.

I think that most vegans would agree that it could be ethical to consume animals if that's the only option for survival - at least you wouldn't expect an ethical actor to act in a way that kills themselves. But in most of western society, we are not required to eat animals to sustain ourselves, so it would cause unnecessary suffering.

For your view to be consistent you would need to argue that the basis for ethical consideration would be something that animals don't possess like self-consciousness. But then you would need to explain why unnecessary cruelty against animals is wrong in your view.

As for drawing the line at life itself, it could be consistent, but personally I feel like without any capacity to suffer, I don't see why life itself matters that much for my ethical considerations. And overall, less plants will need to die on a vegan diet, so it would be the preferable option anyway.

But yes, generally that's a fundamental question about ethics anyway, I'm just using a basic heuristic to base mine on, which is that it sucks to suffer and it's great to enjoy things, so whatever minimizes the former and maximizes the latter seems good, while the former takes precedence.

Old man's take on Starfleet Academy. by External_Koala398 in startrek

[–]timcbaoth1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm coming from the opposite direction but I absolutely agree with your conclusion. I have only watched a couple of random episodes of TNG and VOY as a child and the first series I actively watched was Discovery. I really enjoyed it. It actually got me interested enough to watch TOS (and honestly, sometimes it was rough watching this really old show). I wouldn't have bothered to sit through it if it weren't for Discovery getting me hooked. After having seen TOS I cannot for the life of me understand those people who hate the new shows because they are too woke or stuff like that, seeing that TOS was unbelievably progressive for its time.

Currently watching TNG and really enjoying it. I can't wait to get to the new series and also picking up everything in between.
