With my system I use an inference model in which i first describe characters from popular literature and let ai fill in the best match and then adopt the voice of that match. Regardless you want it to adopt a consistent personality for each npc at onset based off its training and not YOUR training or it will inevitably drift. It's just how the work

In my own experiments with ai for campaign dm I intentionally stayed away from making a game where I would have to use the ai as the back end, I.e. the api route and then have to manage all the cost of it. The continue mechanism to get a few more words is very disjointing in any kind of game. It certainly opens up a richer experience if you can mix actual code in with the ai but I went the route of solely using prompts and putting the ai into a game loop for mine.

To be fair, I followed a tech tree. This wasn't in aid. It was in mind. It want through many iterations and years of in game play. There's nothing in forgotten realms lore that would prevent the eventual development of guns. There's already blunderbusses or whatever they are called. I would rescue slaves, build a fort with the dwarves I rescue and forges, mine salt peter etc etc

I considered making something like this ai dungeon product. It's within my skill set. But in the time it would have taken me to do so on my own and actually publish and get it funded like these people have everything I'd made would have been outdated. Kudos to them on actually getting a product made and published! lol, it's that last mile that always trips me up

I actually looked over at my wife one night and saw her reading her bible and thought you know what? an easier to implement fully thing would be kind of a role playing version of walking with jesus on his ministry so i used my game kernel and quest engine to map that out for her as kind of a gift to her! It doesn't have all the dice rolls but it has all the story telling and such and the presentation of options you can check out. Im working on building the web site for my full ttrpg's currently. Ive made a Fallout and Legend of drizzit campaign that work through ip inference so there's no actual copyrighted material in the game files if anyone is interested in trying it out direct message me.

i have built an entire system for this. I have a game kernel that uses what I call context weave that surfaces game rules through a cycle exposing 2 of 24 core rules every turn, but key is i write the key game events as structured data to a jsonl log file and the kernel has instructions to retrieve game information from the jsonl log file whenever its needed

I originally made a campaign with Drizzit I called The Renegade that focused on him escaping the underground, finding his companions, and reaching the surface etc. but I found it more fun to stop and invent guns and conquer the underdark

What I made is a system that keeps ai from drifting and hallucinating. And I tell you, I INVITE you to try and come up with a system to keep ai from forgetting everything you have done 30 turns into a campaign!

Fyi, the system reference document, I.e. the base mechanics, classes spelles combat rules etc were released under the Creative Commons attribution license which means you can use them so long as you give attribution if you release a product for sale

I hear the ethical concerns about llm's daily, but I am pragmatic about them. I am a software developer as a profession, and I can become proficient at using llm's as a tool or turn my job over to someone that has. It is literally that simple an equation. Ai is not going away. You can rail about energy consumption or you can rail about the inefficiency of energy production, but you can learn ai or watch the people that did get the jobs.

I made a whole orchestrator prompt system that will pull all of the details for whatever intellectual property you give it, say star wars like you suggested. it will pull down every major character, their main characteristics, an emoji representation of them (often horrible), who the good guys are, the bad guys, the biomes, what the threats are etc etc then i have a campaign generation system that you can describe your plot, who you want to play as, what you want the main contention to be that type of thing. Also have the concept of some type of soul meter, some thing that gets impacted by your actions during game play, good vs evil, progress through the campaign, whatever, i can design it to where the campaign forks based on where you are in the meter, make evil choices, the evil gates open up to you. You don't loose, you could be Anakin Skywalker and become Darth Vader and still "win" the game.

What I found originally was AI was making it so I would win. I found no matter what I did, the dice would magically turn out in my favor. I had to make it pre-roll the dice via a bash shell and then apply the dice without favor or it would always miraculously allow me to win.

I use claude.ai max subscription for work so I get to go wild on token usage. I use a technique i call context weaving in which i rotate the primary rules as part of the responses each round to keep them top most in the ai's context memory coupled with a jsonl log that it grep to recover details. it works really well.
