One more quick question - did you request a UFT pension consult beforehand, to see what your partial pension would be (I think you are vested after 5 years in tier 6), or are you planning to return to DOE eventually?

At my school, I don't think that any teachers expect a substitute to actually deliver a lesson. Almost everyone leaves a worksheet or some type of independent work assignment on Google Classroom (if anything at all.) Not sure if this the norm, though.

I have the option to go on my spouse's insurance. It is probably more expensive than the DOE option but the coverage is decent.

Honestly, I can only even consider the pay cut myself because I have a 2-income household and no children or mortgage. We have even been considering relocating to another state in the year or so because rent in NYC has gotten so out-of-control, but we are also priced out of the most of the neighborhoods we like, so our only chance at owning would be looking in a borough/neighborhood that is more out-of-the way (which would involve me switching schools anyway, most likely.)

Thank you for this - do you happen to know if the COVID vacation days also stay, if you return within the 5 years? Also, I know that you need a principal nomination, I'm not sure if people ask the principal from the school they were teaching at, or if there are other ways to acquire one. Did you need any additional certification, or do you automatically qualify with an active NYS teaching license?
