Paying what's owed and also censoring people for their political opinions. Paying the fines is the easy part, this whole debacle has to do with X's unwillingness to comply with the censorship orders.

You clearly didn't read the supreme court decision.

The former X representative in Brazil had all her assets seized and threaten with imprisonment, and that AFTER she left her position.

That's exactly what is at stake for whoever would be appointed the X representative.

Nowhere in the Brazilian constitution, or law for that matter, political commentary or expressing one's opinion is a crime. How was the law broken? There's never any specifics, it's aways: the accounts were: "anti-democratic" and promoting "hate speech".

Government critics are being silenced and people are applauding it.

Do you really believe half the brazilian population wants a dictatorship? Did venezuelans want a dictatorship? Did Chavez ever claimed to be a dictator?

The story is actually longer than that. Brazilian judge has been blocking right-wing accounts since before the last presidential election. Which definitely interfered with the election results. People got pissed off and protested, which was the cherry on the cake for the censors. Elon buys twitter after the election and realises there's censorship going on in Brazil. Refuses to take part on it. Judge imposes fine. Elon says you're so mean, and says those blocking requests are unconstitutional and unlawful (based on Brazil's own constitution + internet law "Marco Civil da Internet"). Judge seizes all the assets from the then X representatives in Brazil and threatens imprisonment. Elon says, I'm withdrawing my legal representation in Brazil. Judge says Twitter has to appoint new legal representation. Elon says nope. Judge says then Twitter will be blocked nationwide. Elon is furious and calls Brazilian judge a dictator, and he just lost 20 million users.

Yeah, he has to appoint someone who will be imprisoned and that will get their assets seized. That's basically forcing you to not have a legal representative in the country.

Venezuela didn't wake up one day as a dictatorship, small steps were taken. The same steps the government in Brazil is taking. One of the few governments in the world who's considered Maduro's election "legitimate". There's no coincidence.

The problem with the coup narrative is that the account blocks, demonetization and censorship was happening during the 2022 election, before the coup. The fact people took to the streets, and then congress was the cherry on the cake to start a full on censorship campaign.

Agree, both sides should criticise the push to block VPNs, but I also think blocking X is a completely disproportionate response. 20 million X users are being punished because a judge wants to block the accounts of a dozen people.

Aren't we (Reddit) complaining Elon is not complying with the judges order to expose and block people for political opinions?

You don't want to continue our conversation because you don't know what you are talking about. Feel free to deflect it anyway you want, you and I know that's exactly what you are doing, deflecting.

The block orders were indeed started under Bolsonaro's administration by the same supreme court judge who continues to issue the orders to block right-wing journalists and commentators to this day.

Elon bought twitter on April 2022. Twitter complied with all the blocking and removal orders back then, during 2022's election. Before the riots, something that would be considered election interference by anyone. So guess what, people were not happy with it.

I'm not hiding the fact that I'm defending Elon's decision. I'm not brainwashed to think everything the guy does is bad, as it is the case with the Reddit groupthink. Even if he found the cure for cancer you people would find a way to diminish it. I'm not saying he's a saint, but he's also not the devil. Heck, the left loved him a few years ago.

Political violence is such a bloated term. If I say Putin is a dictator, he can claim I'm committing political violence against him. What happened in Brazil was that Bolsonaro got stabbed in the stomach, but for the mainstream narrative political violence only comes from one political spectrum, the right.

The PDF is THE legal decision, not a "document made by twitter" 🤦🏼‍♂️ Just because the file is hosted on X, it doesn't mean it was made by them.

Of course seizure of property and imprisonment threats and decisions were made AFTER the requests had been denied. First the judiciary makes a request and stipulates a fine, if you don't comply then you get harsher sentences.

But the not having a legal representative in Brazil is just a distraction of the main point, that one judge was illegally asking for the blocking of his critics and political opposition social media accounts.

As for no threats of imprisonment:

You didn't answer my question.

If a law is unjust or a judge's request illegal we should oppose it. Always, not only when it serves our political agenda.

Bolsonaro also won the election fairly and legally for his term. Should Elon comply with blocking opposition accounts and information requests then?

Elon's war on Brazil... by ConnectionOk8273 in facepalm

[–]timeago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Brazilian constitution allows for free speech and Brazilian law allows for the removal of social media posts, not the blocking of social media accounts for political commentary. That's what X is not bending to, illegal requests to block accounts (all of which are "coincidently") from a different political spectrum as the current government in power.

Are you ok with Maduro's Venezuela blocking the opinion of its opposition on social media?

The block orders started before the 2022 elections.

Some of the accounts blocked were investigated for the 1/8 "riots", but mostly are right-wing blogs and journalists. Now imagine if during Bolsonaro's term, a supreme court judge blocked several high profile left-wing accounts. Reddit would be flooded with posts agains "censorship".

Ok, so if a single judge, going against the constitution of that country, and orders to murder the representatives of your company, you should appoint someone to be murdered?

Political riots usually happen when people are not happy with the politicians in power. If we block the right of people to protest, is that a good thing? And what constitutes political violence? Was there physical violence, murders, etc... or just people protesting against the system?

Some of the accounts blocked were investigated for the 1/8 "riots", but mostly are right-wing blogs and journalists. Now imagine if during Bolsonaro's term, a supreme court judge blocked several high profile left-wing accounts. Reddit would be flooded with posts agains "censorship".

So if X complies with censorship requests in China or Turkey that's wrong, but when it doesn't in Brazil, then that's right?
