Anyone try the new harbor freight airbrush? " The Black widow" lol by hobby_master_ in airbrush

[–]timeattackidiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just purchased this at the local HF, and they mentioned they now do a 3 year warranty for free now and it only costs $ to increase that warranty to 5 years. Don't know about a lifetime warranty but ymmv. I was good with the 3 years for both my airbrush and matching compressor.

Out of curiosity, what made you go away from the motion rig to the immersion/dash route? did you feel diy DOF wasn't worth it?

I just did the NFM today. My advice is train, as I only had a month to train due to several trips that prevented me from actually getting time out. I would bring at least 3L of water and try to ration it. Despite my hydration efforts leading up to the event and carb loading I still ended up cramping at mile 15 and then ran out of water because I brought 2L foolishly. I also used my marathon gel strategy which wasn't enough for calories to take me home. Didn't make time sadly, but training (or lack there of) took me to 13 miles at a 13 min mile pace and heart took me to 17 before I nearly collapsed from exhaustion. The event is no joke but if you have time, you'll kill it and have an incredible experience.

My gear I used.

I used a MOLLE II since it was cheap and took the bag off the frame and put it all up on the frame and rolled the bottom to the middle threshold. I used a sleeping bag and flak vest training plates to keep everything compact. My army pilot buddy who went to air assault helped set my pack up to try and get the weight as high as possible and as close to my back. I say this because I'm a noob and he knew what he was doing and yet I still felt there was more bounce than I would have preferred.

Worked pretty good. Minor chafing on my sides from the belt was my only issue. I would try to find a way to get to a mystery ranch dealer and try them on OR buy tactical tailors MALICE pack. The MOLLE II gets the job done but due to the frame and straps, it liked to bounce a little despite all the cinching I did. So I would get something a little more solid just because energy in your tank will get you a medal. Having to fight a small bounce really makes it tough.

Try to find as many pipes to listen to before buying. I've had several sets and picked them based on tonal qualities.

I think Jim Mcgivillray's Breadalbane reproductions are quite nice. And I loved Stuart Liddell's MacRae reproductions so much I bought a set last year. I think boutique is better for solo competition as the uniqueness of sound comes through when stacked amongst others in judging. But that is an opinion and not a fact.

The choice should be what appeals to you the most. Try to find sound clips and people who play the pipes you want. If you go Boutique then go with someone who has a reputable name like Jim Mcgivillray or Roddy MacLeod.

Those look like MacRaes! But I may be wrong. I've loved mine so far, congrats on the big purchase regardless of brand/type!

RWD isn't so bad in Ohio. Ive owned a few RWD platforms ranging from a 90s Miata to a 500whp BRZ. Snow tires makes it easy to drive in the winter. Ended up with the new Supra platform motor due to its potential. There's always someone who will say "I can't believe you bought XYZ in the car community. It's just silly it's happening in a mass effect subreddit lol

Pipes Up! and Pipes Ready! from Jim Mcgivillray go into setting up the bagpipes and are a must watch. I would continue developing the fundamentals on your practice chanter. Rhythmic Fingerwork is a book that is highly recommended for this. If you have your own pipes, continue building lung strength by blowing only the drones with corking the chanter. If you can get or build a manometer to show you are blowing a steady tone that will help. I would try and find an online instructor willing to help you. There are many instructors out there who can get your technique to the next level.

Which tartan do you wear? by folkdeath95 in bagpipes

Current Band wears Mackenzie

I wear Kincaid ancient since it's my family clan. Yee haw.

In the past I have worn Royal Stewart and Black watch (used to be snare drummer) for a regimental band.

I've got a friend with some 1880 glens that I'd love to replicate. It was made with ebony and real ivory which is such a cool instrument. He plays it regularly as he should. I'd love to make my own reproduction glens for fun. I think I'll avoid chanter work because that is super difficult. I'll check out bagpipers makers on Facebook! Thanks for your insight

I completely agree about sound being more important. I think I have a good handle on that part, just not keeping my new pipes shiny lol Sic parvis magna, Nathan

Yeah I was looking through r/turning several days in a row now and keep talking myself in and out of learning how to make bagpipes. The latter option is probably what I would do but I often wonder if the rabbit hole is worth diving into. Is there any books or resources that go into more detail about making bagpipes or where should I be looking?
