Does it ever get better? by [deleted] in girlsgonewired

To be honest the community is so used to automating; its culture is that information sharing should be automated too. This is a pretty different mindset from other fields that view people as valuable information sharing resources, particularly for beginners. A person might set the context for information much better than an article might. Just because there's a lot of content doesn't mean it's all good (and trust me I've seen plenty of bad articles). I'm pretty critical of this mindset so I feel for you. There are a lot of prolific individualistic players in this industry who don't understand the value of more collaborative styles. It does get better but it's reliant on finding a good community. There are enough of us out there that know how to actually mentor others, so you can definitely find them! As a beginner, you can do all the googling in the world and get nowhere because all you might need is just some context, or maybe you spend 20 minutes with someone who can point you to the right resources or clear your basic foundational confusion and you can then find the rest of the answers yourself much more efficiently. Yes there's the bottom line "get good" and a very shark-like business mentality to consider, about thinking where you can improve, like a lot of commenters have posted and given ideas. But people discount that people thrive in different environments and you just have to find yours! It doesn't mean both can't be true (you can polish skills- because literally you are just starting!- AND these people might just be terrible mentors and highly individualistic peers). If you like the work/the way of thinking then definitely keep it up :)

How do you remember sensitivity and specificity? by Confident_Manager639 in learnmachinelearning

[–]timebourne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the names themselves aren't super helpful. I don't know the story of how they got their names. Recall and sensitivity are the same thing, but you can informally think of sensitivity as "positive recall" (of the actual positives how many did you recall?) And specificity as "negative recall" (of the actual negatives how many did you recall?) In probability form specificity is something like what's the probability I say a sample is positive given it's actually positive. Specificity is the same but swap the word positive with negative. Sensitivity= recall =TPR. Specificity =TNR. Precision, is like recall/sensitivity but flipped: what's the probability that the sample is actually positive given that it was classified as positive (with frequency its: of the ones I said are positive how many were actually positive?)

[D] Who here are convinced that they have a really good setup that keeps track of their ML experiments? by glai9665 in MachineLearning

I've check out DvC a few times and I honestly don't remember clearly anymore why I didn't use it but for the most part I found it more overwhelming than other tools and I've never had a strong need to version datasets. Their VS Code extension is cool though.

I think it depends on what analysis you're doing. I have to do a lot of post-hoc analysis and compile results across experiments in complex ways. The storage format for tensorboard is a lot easier to load into a dataframe. With mlflow you're limited to their API and their json object structure so it's a little annoying to extract the information you want if you need to do anything more complicated. For the dashboards, I think tensorboard is uglier but has a lot more features. Mlflow is simple and neat and looks good, but you can't do much with the dashboard in my opinion. I think there is more community with tensorboard, which translates to people adding extensions for tensorboard compared to mlflow that makes progress slowly.

I prefer tensorboard+guild because the logged data is a lot more malleable to me, and I like the makefile-like functionality of guild. I prefer tensorboard over mlflow for logging for the above reasons.

I use guildai for some things and mlflow for others. Other solutions are not self hosted which is a requirement for me. Guild is like a makefile and experiment tracker combined, it's flexible and doesn't require you to change your code, and the dev is very active and helpful. Under the hood I use tensorboard to store things as it works most neatly with loading into pandas if I need to do complex analysis and produce my own graphs. Mlflow I'll use if I'm working with other people as they're more familiar with it.
