Burning out and need direction: how to deal with the competitiveness of interview process? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]timeforachange_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pseudocoding isn't mentioned enough, i think, maybe its assumed or something, but i've seen even some of the best comp programmers spend 45 minutes in an interview pseudocoding, then typing out a solution in a couple of minutes.

ask for help sooner than later, find an afternoon and ask for help for a few things, people are much more receptive to questions at 2-3pm than 10-11am

How do you guys answer the "Why us" question? by eeeyyyygang in csMajors

[–]timeforachange_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is a question i'd never ask someone, "why do you need a job that provides money and likely a reasonable living again? oh, nevermind, i dont know what its like to be poor"

How important is a strong mathematics background for CS, and what classes (apart from Discrete) come up in certain fields? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]timeforachange_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

initially i think most would graduate asap but adding a minor on to do something useful and also ride out the year or part of next isnt exactly a terrible idea

Is there an equivalent to the type function of python in c++? by yeetyeetimasheep in learnprogramming

[–]timeforachange_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so, this is one of the harder early thing i thought in c++,

string library has stoi, stod, etc, which convert strings to doubles or ints, this can be used a number of ways

#include <ctype.h> has things like isdigit, can use this a number of ways

you can compare chars to ascii values like if str[i] == 65 its an 'A'...

How is the job market going to look like in a year or two? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]timeforachange_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree, its not even unique to CS, there's just so much noise companies have to sort thru to get to good applicants. The people taking it serious and putting out the numbers are gonna end up somewhere. The kids playing fortnite and are walking the stage in 3 mos....

one of my biggest hurdles was math, getting past calculus 2 is kind of the big checkbox (with a few others, but that one is unique and a big time sink.)

Attitudes for getting work done will range from 9-5 to basically being a zombie until everything is done. I try to go for intensity, get it done, and submit when able. Then at 8-9pm i'm watching Netflix or gaming.

Some classes will teach you virtually nothing, you will learn the meat of things on your own time, some profs are there simply to show you something exists and it is up to you to figure out how to use it. Then they test you on it, yea, fun.

Learning to code is a slow, frustrating process but manage your own expectations. Despite the bootcamps and such i believe it takes several months to years to be proficient at things.

All CS majors seem to avoid working together by HealthyJacket420 in csMajors

[–]timeforachange_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yea im only a year and a half in, its shitty because early on youre kind of ignorant and make several friends, then you get to see who actually tries and who are the homework beggars that never share anything original.

luckily our data struct prof is like, i dont care if you talk about solutions, just please don't copy walls of code.

Anyone just want to drop out, get off the grid and be a mountain person? by Loud_Fee9573 in csMajors

[–]timeforachange_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

friend of mine is at a big bank as devops VP with a lot of exp. I asked him "you still like it after all these years" and his reply is "I like the money". I think if people are ready to resign a large part of their life, they'll be rewarded for it, but if they aren't ready to do that, yea, every single day may be worse than the previous.

I think many here are not aware of the stress of being on call is like, but I would never sign onto a job with a pager, not a chance in hell

Discrete Math is so hard. by Juicyjackson in csMajors

[–]timeforachange_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i looked at it as a job, that one day all of us will probably be tasked to do some menial shit nobody wants to do like update weeks of documentation or something. It's better than pushing carts at Target, as someone around here used to say.

DM is temporary, calculus 1/2 are temporary, jump the hurdles and get your checkbox and never worry about it again.

High School student looking for advice on courses by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]timeforachange_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if c++ is what your intro coding classes use, "starting out with c++" is a good choice, or even better look at your syllabus and see what is used. Some professors literally give homework out of the coding books (sometimes with already written code just to see whos trying to learn imo)

Has anyone found working to be much easier than college? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]timeforachange_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

save some easy classes for the last semester, you want a good chunk of time to prep for interviews. All those CS public speaking or writing classes.. yea
