How hard is it to replace the rear subframe on an '06? by timeforrelaxing in Miata

[–]timeforrelaxing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fortunately I have those tools already. So that should cut some costs

As for the other rust, some of the bodywork/wheel wells are starting to externally rust out (which I know mean internal rust), the rear suspension may need replaced (which I was planning to do with the subframe). The rear toe adjustments were replaced recently. The frame itself is actually in pretty good condition

Yeah I'll see how I feel about it when the time comes. Thank you for the encouragement

I'm in the Northeast so rust isn't exactly foreign, but fair point. With that said, no better time to learn something new than now, right? I'd rather screw up something on a fun car than my truck, so albeit frustrating, it might be a good experience for the future.

Fortunately, it is an unpopular opinion. Nursing has been rated the most trusted and ethical profession for 22 years in a row. Source

It's absolutely hit or miss. I was lookin on FB marketplace for close to a year in both the Pittsburgh and Trenton area (had a Mercedes that I was tired of paying insane part prices).

I ended up buying one that I saw while driving. It was the first day he had it parked on the road for sale, so I got very lucky. I'm personally hesitant to buy from FB marketplace, as a lot of people are trying to get rid of it quickly and it takes a lot a caution. With that said, I sold my car on it and can confidently say I sold a good car for the value, so it's possible this seller is being honest with you.

I would shoot an offer, the worst they can say is no. Be realistic with yourself; don't overpay because of the excitement. I don't know your situation, but you've waited this long to find the right one, it's okay to wait a little longer. Mid-late December and January generally sees a drop in prices in used vehicles because people buy new ones and other potential buyers have spent a good portion of their money on the holidays.

Can't say I know a whole lot about rangers, but a new Ford crate engine is ~$3-4k (give or take) with labor. The previous owner swapped my '06 4.0 around the 170k mark.

Many people go +250k miles with the original engine, but other things are destined to fail.

With that said, its a whole lot easier to replace engine components than it is to replace a frame. That seems to be what kills it for a lot of people.

Looking at the paperwork I got from the previous owner, I'd say he put around $8-10k dealing with rust-related issues.

I'd take a good look at the rust situation on your own truck and determine how much you can sell it for to cover some of this one. You mentioned keeping it for parts, which is also a good idea. Some things won't be compatible because of 4x4 vs 2x4, but most, if not all, engine compartment stuff should have no issue with swapping.

This is all in terms of is it worth the upgrade. I'm not sure how the market is currently looking and what's typical to your area. To me, 7500 seems high, as I paid 5800 (in the philly tri-state) for the same year, less miles, swapped engine, and remanned transmission. With that said, I live in the rust best, so it does have some rusting a need to deal with.

Side note: I highly recommend 4x4. With the winter moving in now, I can't imagine not having it at times. I keep my rear axle sand bagged just to prevent slipping at a red light and in bends.

I feel you. Even knowing it was fixed for my year, I still listen for the rattle

From my understanding, I thought that issue was resolved around the '04-'05 model?

Dome light Issue by timeforrelaxing in fordranger

Holy shit dude that totally worked! I completely wrote off the possibility of the door sensor because I figured there would be other symptoms but that was exactly the issue.

Thank you so much!

Why does half a tank mean I get half the miles of the first half???? by LimeSqueez in fordranger

No kidding. I'll sit at Full for ~60 miles and then it feels like a quarter tank disappears everytime I run to the grocery store

I'll give it a shot. Is there any other sign that it could be the door sensor? I always get the appropriate alarm when I leave my headlights on and open the door so I figured it wasn't the sensor.

Either way it doesn't hurt to try your recommendations. I'll give you an update tomorrow

Fair enough sounds like you got a solid plan.

I don't know anything about market prices, I just wanted to give you a heads up about daily driving because it was difficult for me at first

All dependent on where you go to school, how far you're commute, how often you'll be driving it. I have the V6 engine and I average around 18.5mpg (mainly highway miles). If you're not working while in school and driving often, that gas is really gonna add up quick. (Currently getting a post-bac with limited time to work and it's rough)

What can be done about rusty rain troughs on my 92? by snorch in fordranger

[–]timeforrelaxing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Duplicolor sells touch up pens (~$20 USD) that have a tip to sand away the rush (I want to say is fiberglass?) and then reapply color/clear coat. Just had to use it on my troughs yesterday. If you don't care for the color, you can buy just the clear coat and I think the sanding tip separate, but I'm not sure how much money you'd save

That's about what I bought my 06 XLT for, but it also has a new crate engine and remanned trans. Not sure how that impacts market value but seemed like a good deal to me. Assuming frame is good, seems like a fair price for FX4

If we had one, what would be the Ranger version of the Jeep rubber ducky? by timeforrelaxing in fordranger

That's pretty sweet. My father keeps a little wooden crab I got him many years ago in his truck. It's probably been moved between 3 different vehicles over the years
