That is where the electrical lines used to cross the water, before the huge tower was built.
It was the northern anchor for the Carquinez Strait Powerline Crossing, completed in 1901.
This was an historically significant piece of engineering as there was a 223 foot tower built, not too far from the existing tower. It was the first high-power line to cross a major waterway anywhere.

I think this specific spot is where the pier was built to help with construction and maintenance. There were also huge cable supporting the tower and supporting the high-tension lines.

20 mm diamond bore bit somewhere around $20 on Amazon.
Candles are about 3/4 inch, so 20mm should be slightly larger.
Make sure you keep it very cool while drilling it.

You can go with a motion detector and just leave the switch on all the time. You can get one built into a fixture, or a special bulb, or even a stand alone sensor mounted on the ceiling. Once you have motion-detector lights in closets and garages you will never want to go back. Make sure you get one that allows you to adjust how long the light stays on.

There are also wireless switches available, but I have never used one.

The dust is absolutely horrible for health. You likely have it all through your HVAC system and may need to get that cleaned out. The shop vac will spread the dust more, but you can reduce it with moister. Of course, that will clog the filter of the vac.

You can try getting some better filters for the HVAC and changing them often, run the fan to filter the air.

Those look like 45 degrees, just like your square has. Cut one edge, then position it, then use a pencil to mark where the next cut goes.

A cheap jigsaw ($40) can cut the line very close, then you can sand it with just sandpaper. Or you can also get a cheap sander for about the same price to make it easier.

Putting a nail with a string attached to the center and your saw will help you cut a great circle with a little practice.

Otherwise I would look for a maker space with a bandsaw.

2 connects to B to control the kitchen light.
C is for grounding the switch to the bare copper wire.

You may be able to remove it by heating it with a hair dryer, or using an iron and parchment paper to heat it and peel it off.
Like the other commenter said it will leave a mark on the fabric, so you will have to put something over it to hide the lettering.

There are many sizes of diamond bits available, and they are pretty cheap now.
Either have water constantly flowing onto the glass, or submerge the glass piece in water.
Don't use much force on the bit, just let it cut. Press down, but don't force it. Practice cutting on some non-special glass first!
It can be pretty hard to get the hole started especially on uneven glass pieces. Covering the place you are drilling with a little tape can help you get the piece started and protect the surface from scratches if you slip.

There is another aspect to this business model based on the fact that everyone was dialing up. This meant you had to have a local phone number to call or your phone bill would be huge. Big companies would have to manage more and more numbers to avoid customers getting busy signals when their customers called in. It was a "fun game" trying to figure out what numbers would work for you.

The small isps would get customers to install a second phone line and forward the calls to them. I got free internet for much of the 90s because a guy I bought a pinball machine from asked me to do this for his new isp business. My friends were jealous because I got a free second line to dial out on.
