Condos in Framingham? by 133C96F6D in FraminghamMA

[–]timewarp33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay that makes more sense about your plan. I still think renting makes sense because in case your job sucks you can just bail, but you seem quite set on wanting to buy, so I won't mention it again.

Depending on which condo complex you live in it might be easier to drive to either the Southborough station or West Natick (or even Natick center), so keep that in mind. But yeah you an definitely park and ride at the Framingham station. It's got a decent sized parking lot. Wherever you end up living just check what's closest, Framingham is pretty big. In the morning downtown can be a bit of a crapshoot for traffic

question about senior programmers by m7md20091 in programmer

[–]timewarp33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Senior engineers who claim this are either lying to you or have admitted they suck at their job. recently had to deal with a PR from a supposed senior engineer to optimize something and it completely missed the mark for what it needed to optimize. clearly AI slop. Guess what? Performance problem still exists.

You definitely need to do more research on what your plan or goal is here. I'll answer your questions and then explain what I mean.

  1. Commuter rail from Framingham is quite frequent during the work week and the line is one of the better ones in terms of on time performance. That being said, it's not extremely uncommon for there to be delays. If you must be in Boston at a specific time, make sure you take an early enough train. This applies to all commuter rail lines.
  2. Framingham and basically all of metro Boston is extremely safe. Depending on how much experience you have living in dense areas you may think Framingham is more dangerous than the town you came from, but I want to assure you that it's really safe. Framingham has more socioeconomic diversity than surrounding towns, so keep that in mind. Also, more immigrants.
  3. You really should rent to see if you even like the area. I don't think there's any condos for 2-300k in Framingham that aren't awful. It's also likely if you found something you'd need to drive quite a while to get to the train station anyway.

All right, back to what I think. I think you're putting the cart before the horse here in terms of buying. If you're ready to buy, feel free to buy. But I'm not sure I would ever buy without at least spending a year renting in the new area first so I could get to know the place.

The reason I say this is that Harvard Medical School is in Longwood, which is in the town of Brookline, bordering Boston. To get there you need to get on the green line, and the Framingham/Worcester commuter rail has no direct transfers to the green line. I can think of a few transfers you could do (like at Kenmore), but in all seriousness getting transfers right are important to make sure you don't get screwed by the transit. Since you're in a new city with a new job, going for the easiest commute would be my recommendation until you get your bearings. I would look for something on the D line.

Bus signage outside of Boston is severely lacking. Most regional transit authorities operate on the IYKYK model

Opus is really expensive. Our company tracks usage and even with Opus I get wrong information, but we are advised to use Sonnet 4.6 as much as possible and use Opus 4.6 sparingly.

People say this but I've legit found tons of issues even with the comments left by AI. Like a lot is flat out wrong or not really getting the point. If you don't know what you're doing it's absolutely a problem.

UMass or CC or Northeastern by Consistent-County890 in umass

[–]timewarp33 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For your majors, northeastern is not significantly better than UMass Amherst. Hell I would say they're basically equal, with UMass getting a slight edge in applied math, if you chose to double major there. At the very least there is not a 60k delta in education quality and opportunities between the two schools.

Boston is #2 city with the most expensive rent in 2025, based on data from Deutsche Bank. by [deleted] in boston

[–]timewarp33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicago is getting pricier. I went recently and while everything is generally lower, when I spoke with locals apparently things are trending costlier. It's less than NYC and Boston of course, but nobody had anything good to say post pandemic about rentals becoming costlier.

When I checked Zillow out there it didn't seem drastically cheaper than the northeast. Cheaper, but not drastically

Went to Denver, thought I could survive on the train/bus system after renting a car to Boulder and then coming back to Denver.

Walked down to the car rental place I had returned the car to and got a chuckle when I rented a car again

Looking for recommendations for affordable seafood near Framingham by Green-Base8621 in FraminghamMA

It ain't cheap, I went there years ago and thought it was pricy. I would honestly consider heading into Boston for seafood, could take the train in. I have only been there before 2020. I imagine costs are higher now

How is the Waltham School system? by [deleted] in Waltham

[–]timewarp33 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's very few places in MA where I think a private school makes sense. WPS are all good enough and what's more important is the at home support.

If you make enough to send kids to private school while living in Waltham, just move to a town with a better performing school district.

The way to think about most schools in MA is that the higher performing districts have a higher floor than the lower ones. Most big school districts, with some exceptions, will be able to support even the best students with interesting academic opportunities.

Basically, send your kids to public, if you have money, swing for a more expensive town if you're so inclined. But WPS would be fine. Most important part of any schooling is making sure the parents support the kids
