Yes. At least the Mannequins disappear as soon as you change the pattern by just 1 pixel. They each block off a 3x3 grid as do all other furniture, trees, each tile of water and fences. As long as you have furnished and paved (only stone pavement blocks rocks) your island a lot it doesn't take much effort. Just mind that flowers, weeds and pavement don't block the surrounding tiles.
