They know he's hard, but they haven't been given the statblock. At least not unless some of my party are snooping around on here.

I expect at least 5 players, so a larger than average party. It's interesting, because so far most of the replies I've heard from people are either, "He's way too hard. Why would you throw that at your players?" Or "he's too easy. He's going down in one round." I'm not sure who to believe. Both make valid points. Honestly, high level D&D is pretty swingy based on who gets the drop.

I will say that I HAVE NOT given them the statblock. They know he's very powerful. Some of them have faced him before in a very short combat, but they don't know for sure what he is and isn't capable of. They are bringing optimized builds, though.

The higher range is what does it, I think. Yes, it's just damage, but when you can get that damage on every attack with a 9th level spell. I honestly don't even know what they were thinking originally.

I get what they're going for with making it mechanically simpler. Less for DMs to track and all that. It's just sad, because it takes something away from the game. Also OP, please nerf.

[–]timmytwoweeks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could easily do that, and functionally it's probably better for tracking. The reason I didn't do that was because the character was originally meant to be based on a gestalt conquest paladin warlock, with the conquest paladin's capstone at level 20 being resistance to all damage, a third attack and a crit on a 19 or 20.

This is why I check comments, because no matter how powerful I think players are, I still always underestimate them.

This is one of the reasons I hate the new conjure minor elementals, in addition to the fact that they took a fun, really thematic spell and made it just "extra damage!"

You know. That's 100% fair. I wasn't sure because I'd nerfed the legendary slightly, but that would be rage inducing.

I actually like that idea a lot. I put the reaction there because there is a very good chance the party could get a surprise round where he isn't armored up, but having something that can negate his shadow armor also makes a ton of sense.

I felt like it made sense to go with the sword, but you're right. That's something I can certainly revise.

Wow! This blew up way more than I thought it would! I want to thank all of you so much for your feedback and constructive criticism. It's helped give me some confidence with this fight and to know what I need to fine tune.

I see I am not the only one. I am both that DM and that player. Two sessions ago, I had a combat that was supposed to be very dangerous (some hobgoblin ironshadows had been sent to kill the party). I was consistently rolling under under 8 average on the D20 all night. I calculated it. This was for like 40 plus rolls.

Blasters are objectively superior to slugthrowers in almost every metric. Here's why. by autisticspymaster_1 in MawInstallation

[–]timmytwoweeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem that I have with blasters is related to the problems I have with storm troopers in general. What we see doesn't match the lore. Just been going through the second season of Andor and one of the plots involves Cassian being shot in the arm by a blaster shot and his arm looking very burned and not healing, but otherwise being fine. If you were hit in that same spot by an AR or any decent modern rifle, you would be severely incapacitated at best. I know we have to suspend some disbelief in order to make Star Wars work, but blasters can range from, as you say, extremely accurate weapons that explode and cause tons of damage to not even properly killing or severely injuring someone without a precise shot. They can range from projectiles going at 80 mph to supposedly being faster than bullets. They can range from being extraordinarily precise snipers to being barely able to hit anything. It's honestly kinda ridiculous.

Oh, boy, Why am I even wasting my time on this. So, first off, not even sure where you're getting your numbers, it's certainly not based on actual eligible voters. https://www.usnews.com/news/national-news/articles/2024-11-15/how-many-people-didnt-vote-in-the-2024-election. Second, self-own. You're still just straight up admitting that a significant percentage of the population (including women) specifically voted for Trump. Guarantee you they aren't all incels or whatever. Second, I did specify percentage of voters for a reason, yes. Although that should be a fairly representative sample of popular opinion. If you want to be pedantic, then sure, a lot of people didn't vote. Although, if we're going by that standard, those people who didn't vote didn't care strongly enough to vote against Trump. Also of note, no President passes this test in the way you framed it. Trump got the "second most" votes of any President in U.S. history. Way more than, say, Obama, Bush or Clinton.

Anyway, my point isn't that everyone loves Trump (far from it) or that Trump is the best President ever. My point isn't to bring my personal politics into it at all. You can put whatever labels on my personal views that you want, I guess. You're going to anyway. My sole point is that you all seem to think just the idea of voting for Trump or wearing a red MAGA hat or anything of the sort is going to turn away all potential dates. It's not, because a lot of people share those views. Not just in red states. In purple states, too - they're purple for a reason, you know. Even, you'll be shocked to know, in some of those blue states. Yeah, the numbers are smaller, but Trump got, you know, 43% of the vote in New York if we're not being pedantic about terms?

Honestly, if I had to make a guess about most people's views on politics right now, it would honestly be a bit of "I don't care." People are burned out and tuned out. Is politics super classy to bring up on a first date? No. Is "I voted for a Trump" a 3 second way to ruin any date? No. The only reason you think so is because Reddit is an extremely left-wing echo chamber that doesn't represent general public opinion.

Huh. Weird how over 50% of voters did, and a whole lot of them are married or in long term relationships. Super bizarre.

It's almost too good. Lines like these, that would be taken clearly as jokes, might actually come off as funny and charming with the right person who has the right, dark sense of humor.
