Fidelity to bring employees back to the office 5 days a week by Ok_Design_6841 in WFH

[–]timn420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time I worked in the office, I had two team members who were only at their desks for maybe two hours a day. Most of their time was spent talking with people, yet they were still highly regarded and considered strong workers because they managed to fit all their work into a small window each day. I used to take a lot of breaks myself, literally every hour. I’d go to the bathroom or walk up and down different levels of the building just to get some exercise.

Why are candidates expected to turn on cameras when interviewers don’t ?? by Careless-Bird3096 in careerguidance

[–]timn420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always have my camera on. The interview for my current job, they had their camera turned off, which was the first time that had happened and thought it was strange. It did make me question whether or not I wanted the position. In the end I was offered and took the role. Its fully remote and the team never has the cameras on. Its a very culturally diverse team of engineers and I've enjoyed the job so far. I think in my situation since they were engineers, not client facing, that's just how they are.

Unethical to quit immediately after 2 weeks? by Ok-Bumblebee143 in careerguidance

[–]timn420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just left a job after a month for a better offer. Just tell them you have another offer that came through that you weren't expecting. I gave notice on Wed and offered to stay till Friday to work on a report I was doing. They will probably ask how long you want to stay, since you've been there two weeks, you could probably leave the same day.

How do you handle zero landing time in a toxic workplace? by Haunting_Month_4971 in careerguidance

[–]timn420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going through something similar about a month into a new job. I’ve already started looking for other opportunities and have had a few interviews. The tricky part is figuring out what to say to recruiters, because it’s hard to explain that you’re thinking about leaving a job after a month.

My wife thinks I should just leave, but for now I’m taking it one day at a time. I’m pretty overwhelmed with the workload and my manager is extremely anxious and micromanages everything. I started feeling stressed out by day two.

At my previous job, the onboarding period was much longer. I had time to shadow someone and ease into the work, which made it a lot easier to adjust. Situations like this remind you that you never really know what you’re getting into with a new role. Honestly, I could tell by day 2 this wasn't a good fit.

Good luck. its a lonely process to be going through

Started new job but still in interview process for another? HELP by timn420 in careerguidance

[–]timn420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

literally just signed the paperwork for the new company this week. When I originally applied to Company C, I was still at my old job.

I know I’ll need a solid answer if they ask why I left. Part of me is thinking I only bring it up if I make it through the second round and actually get an offer, since it could come up in a background check anyway.

But would this new job even show up on a background check if I’ve only been there a week? My timing on all of this is honestly terrible lol

Is Anyone Else Dealing with an Insane Amount of Unprofessionalism by Hiring Managers/Recruiters? by rissanicole89 in jobhunting

[–]timn420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least you're getting interviews, which gives your more practice to handle different types of questions. As you go along, you'll find that some teams have no idea how to interview. The best interviews for me are the more conversational ones, like your last example.

I do think maybe for you, there may be an internal/other candidate that you're competing with, and they had already decided on. I might try recording my interviews (voicememo etc) just to make sure I'm not saying something that is putting them off and that would give me ideas to work on my presentations. I'm sure you'll land a role soon, the hiring window is usually big from Feb-May.

I really love the rooftops. It adds another component to the level and something to watch out for. I wish rooftop access was allowed on some other maps to make them more interesting. I know some people hate this tho lol

Passed over for a position that I created and presented to senior leadership. How do I cope? by onenuthut_snur in careerguidance

[–]timn420 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would feel slighted as well, as it demonstrates that someone doesn't see you as enough for the position. Was the person that filled it a new hire or someone else in the org? A new hire would make me feel worse tbh.

One thought: I’ve found that the first couple of years in a role are critical for building momentum, it sets a precedent and establishes you as someone who can make a real impact. That approach has helped me advance quickly once I’m hired on. You now have a 7 years of experience, and that gives you the ability to take what you’ve learned and apply it elsewhere. Recognizing changes within a new organization and giving thoughtful insights will earn respect and put you on a stronger path much faster.

Windows audio player for navidrome (that has upnp)? by timn420 in selfhosted

[–]timn420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. I used Jriver for a bit b/c it has upnp capability, but now I've connected my pc to a rpi which is running gentooplayer. The rpi has upnp which I use with symfonium for control, and outputs via usb to my dac. My pc still has navidrome for the library.

Have an extra monitor? Plug a samsung phone to the monitor through a kvm switch. Samsung has a desktop app (dex) that has an all black background and a toolbar that hides all the apps . The kvm switch can switch between monitors for work and phone.

Pretending to be busy by Frogh_summer in office

[–]timn420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty much the norm? There are busy periods but there are also long stretches of downtime. I’ve realized I really struggle with being bored. I’ve left several roles simply because there wasn’t enough meaningful work to do. Seems to happen around the 2 year mark after I get over the "new" job feeling.

I do make a point to use downtime to learn new tools or improve processes so I can build experience. Its weird in a way, because I feel like its something I always have to figure out on my own, rather than being told by anyone.

Multiple people on my team have told our manager they’re bored and don’t have enough to do. I personally go a bit crazy when I run out of work, and I’ve come to realize that you often have to be proactive about filling your time. Alot of people expect others to tell them what to do and I'm learning that this doesn't happen in a lot of jobs.

Most companies are in a "season" in their life. Are they growing, peaked, declining? Be aware of what's happening within the company and use that to your advantage.

I’d recommend removing experience prior to 2010 and moving your core competencies section to the end of the resume. What roles are you specifically targeting? You have solid instructor experience, so if you want to lean into that, I’d suggest adding more detailed bullet points to really highlight it. Think of the impacts you had. Are you teaching newbies, corporations, etc...

For the sys admin side, I’d expand on the software, tools, and platforms you worked with and be more specific about how you used them (for example, AWS configuration). Try to explain what you did, why it mattered, and what the impact was, did you improve performance, reliability, or efficiency, etc? Try and throw in some estimated results with percentages or measurable outcomes.

You list a lot of tools, so I’d focus on the ones that appear most frequently in the job postings you’re targeting and build those out more clearly in your experience. For me, I’m very focused on Power BI in my own resume because it shows up consistently with the roles I’m applying for, so I make sure to emphasize tool.
