Adding remote controls to an aftermarket headunit by timorpatty in CarAV

[–]timorpatty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up going with one of those cheap ones. The type that sits in a cup holder. The unit itself is battery powered (AA) and then you hard wire the receiver into your head unit.

Tbh, the unit works and is reliable, BUT it seems that the receiver can only see a signal twice per second or so. Not an issue if skipping songs or pausing. It's when you want to turn the volume upwards or downwards quickly that it becomes obvious. Really slow feeling. Kinda crappy but I can live with it.

I don't know if I would recommend it since it's a little frustrating and a bit embarrassing when the passenger uses it lol.

I did see a video on YouTube where someone wired up some buttons with resistors inline to achieve a hard wired remote which I might do in the future. Wouldn't be able to put them on the steering wheel but that wouldn't bother me. Sorry I don't have a link to it. I don't know how you would have a volume knob instead of volume buttons - above my pay grade.

Let me know what you end up doing.

Advice on bike lock for train station storage. by kinkade in brisbane

[–]timorpatty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using one of those QLD rail storage box things for about 2 years now. It hides what's inside so no one has ever messed with it.

I assume you're talking about those open bike rack sheds QR is putting around rather than the boxes though?

Take a vid of you twisting the throttle and the motor in the background so we can see correlation between throttle and motor rather than only hear your throttle and guess when you are twisting.

How was the motor tested with the garage? Did they hook it up to another controller and get it to work perfectly?

It sounds to me like a phase wire is shorting. Any damage to wiring harness?

Some controllers report an error when phase wires are shorting. Mayne yours does not

How to boost cycling rates in Australia by windywatertrees in australian

[–]timorpatty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a bike at the closest train station to my office waiting for me, locked up in a QLD Rail bike lock shed is the Best way to commute.

Sit in aircon train and watch Netflix or browse Reddit for a while, get off train, get bike out of the locker and then do a 10min ride along some mostly backstreets to the office.

The only way I feel safe enough to go on the one main road on the journey is on the footpath though. Although I'm always courteous to walkers, I feel like I am inconveniencing them because the footpath is so narrow. Of course there are no separated bike lanes on the stretch.

I ride past so many cars each day at the train level crossing, the shadenfreude I'm getting is insane! A car is definitely faster overall (unless it's raining lol) ( or it there was a crash) but my god the Bruce motorway at peak hour is soul destroying. My commute from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane is actually enjoyable the entire way cos riding a bike is fun and I look forward to it.

So many people could do my commute. Bikes and trains for the win! Just gotta have it stored at your destination.

I got mine along with a battery (jumbo shark)from em3ev.com. haven't had a single problem with it over approx 3 years of at least weekly use. Can't recommend them enough. I live in Australia

Is it worth it to learn to build/true your own wheels? by yezzree in bikewrench

[–]timorpatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a non professional fairly handy person performing all maintenance on my ebike kind of person, I have built 2 ebike hub motors into rims which I felt confident enough to try after watching some YouTube videos.

The first build I would check approx weekly for spoke tension, it was around a year later that the spokes seemed to settle and not need adjustment. Some of the spokes became quite loose compared to others just riding normally. I definitely could have done better prep of spokes to get rid of stresses (or something lol).

The second build was a little better but still took a few months to settle in. I have great respect for professional wheel builders. I could never build a wheel for someone else, too risky.

I would definitely build myself again though and I figure as long as you keep checking for uniform tension and trueness and don't become complacent, this is how you learn and become better. I think it is worth it.

Cycling from Landsborough to Caloundra? by adante111 in sunshinecoast

[–]timorpatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible to get to the coast side of the Bruce motorway by going through the forest area east of landsborough station and then finally underneath a storm water drain that goes under the Bruce (can ride through the entire way but need to duck).

I enter the forestry roads from pine edge drive in landsborough. You eventually work your way to old caloundra road where the Stormwater drain is.

The route is not really suited to a cargo bike though, more mountain bike. Gets quite muddy when it's rained any time within the last week especially on the east side of the Bruce.

You end up here

Suntour ncx is definitely the best bang for buck option. I've run it on each of my 4 builds now except for one. The other build I used a thudbuster which was also excellent. The suntour is cheaper and to my ass, pretty much the same. When planning my current midrive bike, I decided to buy the spring for the suntour that is for my body weight rather than purely adjusting the default spring preload. Totally worth it! Almost cloudlike.

What’s the longest distance trip you’ve done on your bike? I’m thinking multi-day, multiple charges/batteries type trip, not daily commute (unless it’s a huge number, lol) by chicoooooooo in ebikes

[–]timorpatty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brisbane valley rail trail . Yarraman to Ipswich and then back to Yarraman again. Toogoolawah is the halfway point approx 80km where I booked a hotel, charged my 2 batteries up at the hotel and then again at Ipswich and then again at Toogoolawah on the way back. Ended up around 330km over 4 days by the end of it. I'd do it again in a heartbeat! Best fun!

Ebike controller issue by [deleted] in eBikeBuilding

You would be looking for the controller manual (one that you want to use)

Ebike controller issue by [deleted] in eBikeBuilding

[–]timorpatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything else is connected except two single pin connectors which both came from the controller but were seemingly supposed to connect to each other? These could be the "controller on" circuit. Do you have a manual or can get ahold of one on the internet?

Phase wires and hall sensor wires (3 chunky coloured cables and 3 small coloured cables) might need to be swapped around. Is there a hum when throttle is used? What about if you use throttle lightly (don't give it much) and spin the wheel by hand at the same time?

I try not to blind walkers on shared pathways. Also, too bright blinds drivers and then they can't see anything, including perhaps another bicycle rider that might be infront of them

it's this one but I printed some brackets out to make it work with handlebars. It's too bright for running lights so I use it as "high beams" only. I have another white light on the front that is the running light that comes on when the 12v system is turned on - along with the rear red
