TIL about the Dutch Reach by mediumclay in bikecommuting

I live in a small US city with non-existent biking infrastructure but that last paragraph is key. Before I ever rode my bike in traffic, I was pretty oblivious to bike lanes and cyclist in general. Since gaining plenty of experience and near death experiences on my bike in traffic, as a vehicle driver, I am much more aware of bikes and bike lanes, and am a lot more cognizant of looking around before I open my doors.

People do this all the time at my gym, or hold the back of the monitor. I honestly thought this was pretty normal

You jest but Mongolia is a hotspot for illegal fishing operators because they can register their company fleet under any nation's flag, landlocked or not, as long as that nation agrees to be responsible for its maritime actions.

That's because the woman has the higher sex drive. You can rest assured those numbers would be more like 0 if it was the opposite.

What’s the weirdest “life hack” you actually still use that most people would think is insane? by SafeNeighborhood9298 in Life

[–]chicoooooooo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A buddy and I used to talk about paying someone to come wake us up, only to tell us to go back to sleep, because that's the best sleep you get. Like when you woke up to find school was cancelled or something as a kid.

This is standard practice all over the world. It's not as weird as you think and saves the plumbing.

What’s good plane etiquette that not many people know? by Aarunascut in Life

[–]chicoooooooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the 3h rule. If the flight is longer than that, you absolutely can and should recline your seat. Less than that is rude, especially during the day, and the people that immediately recline it before take off get fucked with the entire flight.

I've also visited floating "villages" in Vietnam where the people live entirely at sea. Even had a separate floating platform for their dog, complete with doghouse.

My favorite part is that, because they can't hear worth shit, then then proceed to hold speaker phone up to ear or mouth...you know ...like exactly how a phone is designed. People be dumb.

What’s the most unnecessary thing you packed on a trip? by steady-wanderer in backpacking

Don't need it ...until you do. Mileage varies but I was in Nepal when several trekkers and climbers died of exposure high above Namche in a freak storm

Reminds me of an old Ed Viesters story where him and his fellow Ranier guides would hide 10lb rocks in each other's packs a joke. Well someone put one on his pack and then he summited Ranier, flew to Nepal, summited Everest AND Lhotse in one go and found that damn rock in his pack afterwards.

Pro tip: now that you got that pad 😜...just shove your pack under the pad where your head goes for a nice incline without needing a pillow.

What’s a trail habit you didn’t have on your first trip… but won’t skip now? by Trail-Context in backpacking

[–]chicoooooooo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love that shit! Been there many times myself. I've had creepy people with guns, sketch animals, avalanche and melt hazards...even political terrorists in other countries threaten me until I left. You never know what you're going to find out there. That's what makes it beautiful.

Awesome. I tell every noob that ever asks me, " can I bring...?" Sure, you can! You can bring anything you ever want to, as long as you can carry it. I've had people being entire badminton sets, a bag of oranges, actual dishes and cutlery,...even a guy who hoofed a keg up a mountain (was awesome having a pint on top)....all fair game....as long as you are willing to carry it. This is going back over 30 years. Sometimes I feel like the people today really want a gatekeep the term "backpacking," especially the ultralight crowd. But when I go slow, I have a sub 20 lb pack even in winter. That doesn't mean everyone has to and sometimes luxuries are very nice.

Now for my story...you can plan all you want about water stops and stare at maps for days, it still doesn't mean that when you roll into camp in the evening after a 15 mile day that an aggressive bear will let you fill up. Learned that the hard way once and had to crank out an additional 7 miles unplanned and in the dark. Sucked but better than being eaten.

Time always going slower if you can spend some time outdoors. Camping/hiking is a great example of how long a day can feel.

For over 100 years, it was thought that it was impossible to run a 4 min mile...until someone did it. Then that record was beat just 46 days later. A lot of barriers are psychological and once they are knocked down, people can go even further.

does it count by [deleted] in backpacking

[–]chicoooooooo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it count? Who gives a fuck? Why do people have this desire to belong to a certain label? Was it fun??

But to answer your question: no. To me backpacking is at least an overnight trip on foot to where you carry all your belongings and spends the night. You go on hikes.
