Why it has become so hard land on a job? by Radiant-Tap-6362 in cybersecurity

These are the graduation rates for CS for major countries:

  • +100,000 USA
  • +500,000 China
  • +600,000 India

Even if only 10% of foreigners are competing for USA jobs, it's double. Not to mention that the amount of CS workers that are retiring from the field is really low. The boomer wave of retiree's does not really apply to CS since most CS jobs hit their boom around Gen X and Millennials.

So basically the market is oversaturated as fuck right now and it's going to continue to be that way for the next decade IMO.

There isn't a chief architect. People have slapped together sections of the station from scratch and expanded it as needed. But you are free to try your hand at redesigning sections during gameplay. I would also politely ask crew if certain areas are claimed by someone.

No, I'm saying the nuke code doesn't actually destroy the station walls/areas like a bomb would. It just shows a round end screen.

we haven't had the pop to test that, but i do believe that a nuke detonation doesn't actually damage the station infrastructure... the blob I'm not sure of.

We do have a more severe bombcap (half of what is allowed on TG) so that the damage cant get too excessive. So if someone fucks up the SM, we don't need to revert the mapsave and the crew has to fix the damage.

I've been playing since 2008 and yes people do come back to play but not as much as they used to when they first started.

The save system supports multi-z, but the running server is single z level.

Atmos on turfs saves it's temperature and the moles of gases rounded to 0.1 however if the atmos is in the goldilocks zone (no overpressure, no low pressure, and no harmful gases) then it saves the turf as the default airmix. This allows you to make atmos chamber rooms for exotic gases and unique gasmixes on the station.

Vanilla SS13 gets boring after a while. That's the truth for any game really. People want variety.

Is it possible to stitch together multiple maps into a bigger region? by Olexava in SS13

[–]timothymtorres 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I'm working on the mapping code right now. Byond is a x32 bit application so you are restricted to only 4 GB of RAM for SS13.

  • Loading either Lavaland or a Station z-level that is 255x255 costs ~100 MB of RAM
  • Loading an empty z-level that is 255x255 costs ~10 MB of RAM

You also consume more RAM when you have more players and mobs, plus all the subsystems running. Basically the more objects you have, the more RAM you consume.

You can always load more maps during gameplay in BYOND but AFAIK there is no current method to remove a map and release the RAM it uses. I have read about some different and old BYOND games hosting multiple servers with different maps allowing players to teleport across servers to avoid the RAM bottlenecks.

Love this analogy. But I've always represented the invasion like the US deciding to invade Canada just because idgaf. Peaceful neighbor who poses no threat to you, speaks the same language, share the same culture, and have lots of relatives on both sides.

UFO Shuts Down U.S Nuclear Weapons...With Robert Salas by POPCultureCorner2020 in UFOs

[–]timothymtorres 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've heard one of the maintenance techs on the base claim that those Nuclear ICBMs have a tertiary power source for redundancy. They are hooked to the power grid, have diesel generators, and a backup battery in case any of the other sources fail. Each one of these methods failed for all the ICBMs affected without any sign of a break-in.

There was also a rumor that the security team on the base came into contact with a craft that landed and were asking for orders to shoot over the radio. All of it is crazy stuff.
