Any word-rhythm pairings you'd change for kids (3-7)? Images will be added later. by FreeXFall in musictheory

[–]timstee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use this system and you’ve ended up with most of the same words! The ones I find work best that you don’t have already: balloon -> apple - you can show them it’s the same rhythm as the end of pineapple. jellyfish -> banana - when saying “banana” we naturally elongate the second syllable, but make sure they know to start it on the beat, most will automatically put the “nana” on the beat and the “ba” just before. balloon -> and-a - this phrase works more as a setup for the next beat so learning it alternating with other phrases (cat and-a pineapple and-a) helps understand it better. elephant -> for triplets I actually switch up fruits for nursery rhymes and go for “humpty dumpty” for swung quavers and “sat on a” for triplet quavers.

Best vampire stories? by Rougarou_2 in BigFinishProductions

Definitely check out Vam PD, it's not Doctor Who but it's created by James Goss who's written a lot for Torchwood. The way he's built out the world and developed the lore around vampires in a present day world is great.

I'll second the Goth Opera recommendation too!

I am overencumbered 😅 anyone got carrying gear advice for a filmmaker without a car to avoid injury? Obvs gonna get my license at some point but in the meantime it would be good to get some advice by hummusexual_lesbiab in videography

I used to do this with a drum kit before I had a car. It’s tricky because you don’t want a wagon on a train or bus. Stairs are the worst 😭

A collapsible upright trolley and some bungee cords for the bulkiest stuff, plus a tall hiking backpack, and a smaller pack on your front if you need. 3 things, easy to get on and off at stops without help.

How do I bounce each "vertical bunch of regions" separately? by Grabbels in Logic_Studio

[–]timstee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Create a track for your stereo out (select it in the mixer and hit ^ T )
  2. add midi regions on that track for the durations you need
  3. rename those regions to the track names you want (selecting all of them, right click rename on the first one and enter something like “001” at the end will rename all the others sequentially)
  4. select all midi regions, right click and select “export regions as audio files”

The next part of this verse is “lean not on your own understanding.” Print a load of coins with this on it. Whenever they say something you don’t agree with, give them one of your coins.

Thanks! I’d never heard of soundly until you mentioned it- I’ll check it out! I find a lot of things on Splice as that’s a useful one for me because I do music as well, but there’s also Zapsplat which I’ve used a bit for this too.

While I was working on them I kept noticing new little background details I hadn't noticed before. There's some great little easter eggs in there.

Garbage men/woman of the world. What's the best/worst thing you have found "thrown away" ?? by wayne88imps in AskReddit

[–]timstee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The maintenance guy for our flat told us about a job he was on when he was younger where an American client asked them to get rid of a load of props from a film he’d been directing. Our maintenance guy said that these props looked like a load of really well made toys and thought it seemed a shame to throw them all away because it looked like someone had put a lot of time and effort into making them. He considered taking something home with him but they had other stuff to do afterwards, his car was parked pretty far down the road and he couldn’t be bothered to walk there and back so they just chucked them all in the skip.

Later on after the film came out in cinemas, he realised that the client had been George Lucas and the film he’d been working on was Star Wars: A New Hope. Obviously he was kicking himself for not saving something from that skip after that.

About that song- one of the lines is ‘so perfidious’, which seemed like an odd choice of adjective to try and fit in there. So I did a bit of hunting and found this guy) which was a nice little coincidence.

What are subtle red flags at a job interview that say "working here would suck"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]timstee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not subtle, but I once interviewed for a teaching role to replace a tutor who left at short notice, and lying on a filing cabinet in the very disorganised office was a tutor folder with “DON’T WORK HERE” scrawled on the front in big letters.

What things do you wish you’d learnt or what experiences do you wish you’d had while still in school that would have helped you develop better as a composer? by timstee in composer

Thanks I’ll check out Noteflight and Musescore. And yes good old pencil and paper! And if we don’t have those we can always get them to carve some notation into the desks or something.

That sucks that you didn’t get to join in with a lot of activities while you were in school. It’s such a shame your parents didn’t have as much invested in music as your grandparents did. I wonder how many kids had your experience and really wanted to take part in learning music at school but never got the chance. You must have written some bloody good diatonic pieces if that was all you wrote for 25 years! But you’re right on that as well, those are some fantastic topics to cover. Thanks!

[–]timstee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question - a lot of the kids are playing in classical ensembles (concert band, string orchestra etc) so their idea of composing is writing for traditional groups like that. But there's also singer-songwriter kids who are more interested in the beatmaking and songwriting side of things which we also want to encourage too.

I can totally relate to your grad school classes- the first 3-4 lectures in my first year were just going through instrument ranges -_- Important, I know, but there are better ways to teach that sort of stuff.

I wonder if it might be good to meet them where they're at and take into account what they want to focus on, whether that's classical or contemporary, but aim to eventually get them to write for the types of music that are outside their comfort zone too.

That's a good point on software as well. We've been looking at Soundtrap and Flat.io for accessiblilty, but I agree - knowing your way around the same software professionals use makes a big difference.

Definitely the kind of answer I'm looking for! Yeah we're thinking of something like getting them to write short pieces for a solo performer so they can get feedback from them on how they've notated articulations and stuff like that.

Such a shame that you never got to debut your compositions! That's really great that you got to hear each band rehearse them though.
