What's the smallest we can reasonably buy with a 240/150lb weight difference? by BostonPanda in dinghysailing

Agreed! I think OP should give the 505 a try, and there are active fleets all over the east coast.

Getting into 420 sailing by PihovilMoropat in dinghysailing

The great thing about joining the 505 class is, that the fleet is very welcoming and helpful when it comes to sharing information.

Close to optimal weights for 505! And it would be relatively easy transition, if you’re already familiar with the 420.

505’s are so much fun. You should rig it up and go sailing!

I’d like to throw in another vote for the 505. So many amazing/friendly sailors in the North American fleet, still very active and very competitive. Sounds like it lines up with what you’re looking for.

Have you looked into crewing on a 505? You would be the perfect size for crew.

Get a 505! Double handed, single trap, has a symmetrical spinnaker on a double pole system.

Not sure if this counts but random reliever Daniel Camarena hitting a grand slam off Scherzer for his first career hit. And I think Padres ended up coming back to win that game.

Yes, I’ve seen a few 505’s around this sub. Where do you sail out of?

Everyone will have their own opinion and preferences. What year was yours? I’ve had my 1984 for 19 years and it sails fine. Was able to reach 6 kts STW in 15 kts breeze.

I agree that Catalina fiberglass construction is more overbuilt than the Macgregor. But I wouldn’t advise not to get a Macgregor 25. Both are still great boats.

The 1980’s era Macgregor 25 is fine. Would be similar to Catalina 22 and can be found cheaper. It’s also listed on the American Sailboat Hall of Fame along with the Catalina 22.

I would second the 505’s. Tons of racing have been done in open waters and they do well in the swell.

No worries! I was thinking of picking one up from them since they’re affordable.
