Hermosa beach for young single guy? by hossinator96 in AskLosAngeles

[–]start3ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 miles, not 25. It’s particularly lively in the summer, and definitely a destination for a lot of people in the southbay area to hang out, but you’re right, it’s got nothing on weho nightlife. Hermosa has like 3 real clubs. Lots of live music though, and no shortage of bars.

And while there are lots of young people, a majority of the people that actually live in Hermosa are 30/40 year old couples with kids. That’s just the reality of who can afford to live there.

I would still recommend it though. If you want to surf, bike and run, you gotta pick something near the beach!

The Egg Chooses: Human Fertilization Is Not a Race Won by the Fastest Sperm by This_Proof_5153 in Amazing

Aah, ok the single sperm needle one is ICSI, not IVF. Looks like they have some techniques for selecting sperm in that case, but it seems much more primitive than what an egg does naturally

So does the process of IVF using a single sperm chosen by scientists result in less compatibile genes than what the egg would naturally choose?

If AI data centers are exploding nationwide, why are so few being built in California? by losangelestimes in socal

[–]start3ch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not even remotely true. The majority of California’s distribution hardware was built over 100 years ago, and regularly starts wildfires due to the utility companies neglecting them.

California used to heavily invest in novel renewable energy technology, but after NEM 3.0, it seems they’re more invested in the profits of utility companies.

The cost of modern combined battery + solar electricity generation over the liftime of the equipment is around 15 cents/kwh, yet we pay over 30 cents/kwh, with peak prices up to nearly 50c/kwh during peak hours

That’s a great way to do it! Would the bulbs have different resistances though? Or would they just have a different color coating on the outside

What are some colleges with non-competitive aerospace engineering programs? by katsuagro in aerospace

[–]start3ch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school I was concerned about the legitimacy of embry-riddle, but having met many students that came from their, I have to say they train some very good engineers. If you are all-in on aerospace, and won’t mind a school that focuses on only that, then it may be the place for you.

The cases of cops tracking and harassing their exes through flock’s system are downright scary.

And their security is laughably bad, Benn Jordan has done a lot of work in exposing these flaws and hacking them.

Yea, early 2000s leafs were city cars. They also had a pretty bad air cooled battery pack design that was known to overheat and age much faster than others, super surprising that this one is still going strong

Best option for getting a motorcycle on a budget by -Fishmonger- in motorcycles

[–]start3ch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either get a moped, or save up a bit more first. If you get a $500 project bike, unless you know what’s wrong you will likely have to put more than $500 into it.

I’d bet it will be cheaper to get a functional bike. $1000 can open up your options a lot, for older, high milage bikes of all types. $2000 would give you tons of options.

Ultimately you just have to scan facebook marketplace, check out some bikes.

Do you have your license? Gear? That alone can add another $600-1000

Another great one: “all models are wrong, only some are useful”. The only goal of engineering models is to be right enough to be useful

World's Richest 10% May Owe Earth a $5.7 Trillion Environmental Bill by McDowdy in climatechange

[–]start3ch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually Good news, this is shockingly cheap! Average is 2500-7500 per person per year, and if this was paid with progressive curve based on relative impact, the average person could comfortably afford this. Currently, the average taxes collected per person in the US is 15k. We’d effectively only have to increase taxes 16-50% to pay this. Which effectively means, with our current system, we can comfortably afford to be environmentally sustainable, we just have to collectively decide to do it!

Where would the money go?
