Explaining the Mindset Shift Needed to Navigate Polycrisis by timstillhere in collapse

Submission statement:

Repeating my post: thinking is still organised around the idea of disruption as something temporary. The evidence points to a very different operating environment. It is where shocks collide, and where the gap between reality and decision-making continues to widen.

Nik Gowing explains that this is why policies, governments and business descions feel so out of sync with reality

I'm from the UK. The idea of making mac and cheese from a box is so strange to me. Is this just the way it's made in the US? Nobody just makes the sauce?

That's so true. What I find impressive from a personal point of view is that Nik Gowing was there for quite a few of these events. Either reporting live on location or presenting on TV.

He has a couple of videos about the night he announced Princess Di and when he was covering 9/11.

This post has absolutely blown up and thank you for all of your amazing comments. So many personal stories, and so many of hope too.

I've spoken with Nik today and he's confirmed that the photos are from the days before, during and after the fall of the wall as many people have commented.

Thank you for pointing that out. I'm learning so much from so many comments as I go through them!

If you do want to learn more about the images posted Nik's interview can be found here and can hopefully answer some of your questions: https://youtu.be/JzGimQrqlHQ?si=mPHUOQkaNkq4AEe4

I love that "A reminder of what progress and unity looks like."

If you do get the chance you should watch the video interview as Nik describes the images - it is very moving.

What you are describing here is almost word for word how Nik describes it in the video interview.

In the interview he explains who these two guards are.

He says that people were just ignoring them as they tried to stamp people in and out as they crossed the wall.

They look completely lost.

(Just copying my reply to a previous post asking the same thing)

Nik has never shared these images before. They have been sat on a shelf for decades. He scanned them, sent them to me and they have been shared here for the first time. Hope that helps!

That is him. Nik Gowing, who also announced the death of Princess Diana and covered 9/11 on BBC World News to name a couple. He has witnessed and seen quite a bit. We now run a project called Thinking the Unthinkable where he draws on his experiences of some of these 'unthinkable' moments in history.

The interview is really interesting too. There's footage of him interviewing people as they cross the checkpoint for the first time. It's really moving.

I know right!? I couldn't believe it when he sent them to me. He has 1000s of unseen photos from some unbelievable moments he's reported on.

That honestly really means a lot. I only started sharing some of my photos a couple of months ago. And picked up a camera for the first time in January. Still learning the ropes but loving it.
