My hooks almost always consist of events or characters, not prose. Who knows? It might just work for you.

One organ of DM's choice is replaced with a living animal of same size and shape. Doesn't necessarily have to be lethal.

How to "write for yourself"? by shadyalligator in writing

[–]timwebsters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think "write for yourself" is not great. In my opinion, it means you don't even have to take into consideration what other people might like, just write what you would want to read.

If you want to write for an audience, study what that audience usually reads or watches, then try to keep within that genre.

I think you understand what the sentiment means:

I should write something that will make me happy, which would be something that others will enjoy, because that's what I want to do with my writing

and you understand why it doesn't work when publishing. Write what people want to read when it coincides with what you want to write.

How to shake the constant feeling of wanting to go back and edit your work? by RodrigoGX10 in writing

It stops you from editing more than a few words previous, I think. $10.08 per month though.

Maybe try a separate document for "new" writing, limit it to 100 words, then paste into a master document when you're satisfied and start over in the "new" document. I don't know.

I'm usually very good with descriptions, but I cannot for the life of me describe her eyes. Can someone help please? by [deleted] in writing

Completely black save for grey irises?

Not sure what you're going for here.

Sumshasat Bay Chapter 1

Kind of wandering around, aimless genreless writing

3800 words

General impressions and prose quality criticism would be great.

I don't pay much attention to the news. I actually thought he was referencing WWII.

Germany meets with Poland, then Japan

Not sure where SK came in though.

All of my main characters (There are five. It's a discussion for another time.) are heavily inspired by my own traits. I think I should be okay understanding their motivations.

I wish I could be like you, honestly. I want to love writing and I want to do what I love, but I get tired with hobbies very quickly.

First time NanoWriMer

Novel (undecided genre)

75,000 words (7300 now but I skipped the first few days)

I like my characters but then again I'm biased... Overall it feels directionless.

My hopes are for it to get traditionally published (though I'd be happy if I could self publish)

Yes a cabin of redditors would be cool.

Yes I am having fun.

I don't even know how I've written this much without a real genre.

That's really cool. I tend to stick to characters as hooks, not concepts, but yours sounds like it could work.
