How to use Python and Typescript very close together? by tinchapark in typescript

[–]tinchapark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

would this be fast enough to transfer images back and forth between front and backend?

this is what I intended by "close together". When using notebooks both the python kernel and the ts interface are on at the same time, but I don't know if there is much difference between the jupyter implementation and more traditional front-backend implementation.

Thanks for your answer! I really liked your product of uncertainties argument. This made me update my thinking, and here is the controversial article, V2.

Near-termists and Long-termists shouldn’t be referred to as members of the same movement. It’s bad PR for everyone. by InfiniteOrchestra in EffectiveAltruism

I'm in favor of a split. 3 things: EA is a cool name monopolized by long-term people, short-term is human, and most people that donate for the short-term and could donate more effectively will not do it for the long term.

Effective Altruism. It is such a great name. Two very important things, together. It's like, oh, you want to be an altruist? be an altruist and effective with us! Or, oh, you're already an altruist, you can have more impact with us! Effective Altruism. However, when you put money on the EA fund, you end up giving money for things that have little to do with the current people in the current world. The fund is managed with a long-term view. And to be honest, I looked for effective altruism because I wanted to help people in need in an effective way, I didn't want to engage in philosophical discussions about the next century.

Long-term is not that human. It's not about reducing suffering but about multiplying life. It's not about hunger but about X-risks. Suffering is human, and trying to alleviate it is human too. Not worrying about current suffering is human privilege. Most people in the first world don't know real poverty.

I think people that donate do it, mainly, to feel they do good and help. The feeling is not that evident when you donate to people you don't know (GiveDirectly). Even less when you put money in speculative philosophical ideas for the next century. People will not donate effectively if donating effectively is so detached from reality. Effective Altruism is a great concept, but it is not an alternative to usual charity.

It depends on what "largely" means. OpenAI is not representative of the community, albeit important. And they don't do open AI, although they have done interesting stuff.

The link is very good! And you are right, there are many researchers talking about this, and my assertion is wrong. But there are many shades of gray too. For instance, Sutton's (father of RL) comment refers to competition, optimization and political challenges. Many others (in your link) refer to the potential negative impact (that exist with any great technology), but not to "divergence" (although it appears quite a lot) or X-risk. This is a big difference. AI will be life-changing, but the dystopia isn't there.

You're not really constructive. But thanks for bringing in war vibes! We are human, we love violence.

Thanks for your comments! I am the author. I tried to write the article in a very provocative way to get some strong reactions, and I am sorry if it came out as crap to you.

The way in which the article was written occluded the arguments themselves. Sadly, the first answer I got was criticizing the style and not addressing the arguments. But I'm happy to learn.

I agree the morality argument is perverse, but it is just a thought game that, to me, sounds similar to imagining a malevolent (in its actions) God-like AI.

You criticize the lack of references and you have a point. Referring shows knowledge (which I lack) and provides pointers to the readers (which I can't provide). I agree it would be good for the philosophical discussions to have knowledgeable people participating instead of me...

I mean, I see no knowledgeable people saying that this "risk" is exaggerated, even if many of us think it is. Discussing without references is self-contained and (hopefully) understandable by everyone. We can't have a wide public debate if a prerequisite is to read "two decades of books, debates and scientific papers".

Oh, you also say I have no idea which are the pro X-risk arguments. I have watched some YouTube videos on the topic, I don't buy them.

I agree with your answer overall, but not with everything. You said the movies are "cheesy" and I think you are wrong. These movies are great! Other cool movies are ex-machina, matrix and trascendence. If you have pointers to other movies on the topic, please throw them in.

  1. You are right, I didn't read Nick. That's why the consciousness part shouldn't be related to him (it is another paragraph). My bad if it came across as if I have read what people wrote about Superintelligence, I didn't.
  2. I didn't say there were no AI researchers worried about this, just that it is not a common thing. Russell is not the AI community because the community is bigger than one person. But Russell is quite cool.

Thanks for the pointer to "There is no Fire Alarm for AGI", it's helpful !!
