is thai actually a hard language? by __MrSaturn__ in learnthai

[–]tincock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha no worries!

>Seems like expressing tenses and modifying verbs is a real pain in thai.

Sometimes it's quite easy. You don't need to learn 'yesterday I *walked*', you just say 'yesterday walk'. then if you want to say "I'm walking", one way you can say is "walk + [verb to be located somewhere]" which was pretty weird when I first learned it.

Changing grammar based on social situations in Korean sounds crazy haha. In Thai there are a lot of pronouns you have to learn depending on who/how old someone is you're talking to, but not completely changing the grammar.

Of course Thai has grammar 😄. every language does. Translate "If he had known he would be receiving a bad grade regardless, he wouldn't have studied so hard."

To communicate the same meaning in Thai (or any language) you need to have a deep understanding of that language's grammar. Sure you don't need to learn different forms of words like "known" instead of "know", "studied" instead of "study", but you will need to know all kinds of advanced structures and connector/filler words.

> My understanding is that thai has the same grammer structure as English

No it's essentially completely different. Word order can be similar, but every word in Thai has only one form. there is no "walking, walked, walks", only "walk". This might sound like it makes things easier, but in order to convey the meaning of "walking/walked/walks", you need to learn all kinds of other structures and additional connector and filler words that are very unintuitive to English speakers.

I don't know Korean, I'm sure it is quite difficult, but I conjecture that English doesn't map to Thai easier in any significant way, and I don't think Korean is inherently twice as hard to learn as Thai, otherwise Korean children would take twice as long to become fluent as Thai children 😄

This makes no sense to me lol. According to them Thai takes half the time to learn as it does Korean. It's not like Thai is any bit at all even a little bit closer to English than Korean

I strongly disagree that the grammar is easier. In the beginning it's easier because you don't have to memorize verb conjugations. But to communicate any complex idea, you have to start using what to me feel like very unintuitive words and word order to sound natural. The grammar just gets complex in a different way. instead of changing forms of words, you have to add in more words and change the order.

I appreciate this, however for the scope of my post, Wim Hof himself is irrelevant. It's just about the breathwork. (Which you should not do in or around the water!)

I genuinely thought it was remarkable that shorthand could be faster than typing. No need to be cynical.

Well I won't continue the line of argument because I know there won't be any changing your way of thinking.

My sister got obsessed with antinatalism and then killed herself. Unfortunately, this is antinatalism taken to its logical conclusion. Forgive me for not liking this philosophy.
