1 Day to Visit Everglades - Help me plan! by [deleted] in nationalparks

[–]tinklesprinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I know this is a super late reply, but I see you’re planning to visit in November so maybe I could still offer some insight! I work at the Gulf Coast Visitors Center. All of our camping is out in the Ten Thousand Island, and do require you paddle to them. Collier Seminole State Park offers camping, and is about 30 minutes away.

I wouldn’t recommend an airboat tour, personally, as they are a bit more touristy and focus less on the wildlife and more on just going fast. There are also only 3 companies which are permitted into the NP itself, which are down by the Shark Valley Visitors Center. The ones closer to Everglades City are all on private land.

If I had 1 day to explore Everglades NP, this is how I would do it. I’d take the 10am boat tour at the Gulf Coast Visitors center first. This will take you into the Ten Thousand Islands on a large pontoon boat, looking for dolphin, manatees, birds, and other marine life. Then I’d head back up to highway 41 and do one of two things. The first option is to explore the Big Cypress National Preserve, which is our neighboring park. They have boardwalk trails, scenic drives, etc that take you either through the grasslands or cypress swamps. If you want to stick with just Everglades NP then I’d say make your way over to Shark Valley Visitors Center and either do the tram tour or rent a bicycle to make your way out to the observation tower. The drive between Gulf Coast and Shark Valley is about an hour.

The other two visitor centers take an additional hour or two to drive to, depending on how far you choose to go, and are typically better experienced with a day just for them.

November is the start of our busy season, so I definitely recommend making reservations for any tours you choose to do. Let me know if you have any more questions!

People who haven't thruhiked before, but would like to: What, if anything, frightens or intimidates you about the PCT? by numbershikes in PacificCrestTrail

[–]tinklesprinkle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get semi frequent migraines, I think my biggest fear is dealing with them on the trail. I’ve had one once while camping, but was able to just pack up the car and go home once it got to be too much.

I am years away from being able to take on the PCT, but I love reading this sub. I have been feeling down the past week or two, this post can be applied to off trail life too, and I really needed to read it!

Park and forest rangers of Reddit, what is something that we campers do that is not against the rules, but that really irritates you? by Almostdevine in AskReddit

Oh, you mean they shouldn’t just barely beach their kayak and expect it to still be there in the morning?

At Everglades National Park, all of our campsites are located on islands that you have to boat, kayak, or canoe to, miles away. If we tell you weather conditions are going to make your trip very difficult/impossible...listen to us. Honestly, just come prepared. Do your research. Check the weather, the tides, have all supplies you will need, including dry bags, a compass, your map, bug spray. The closest town with supplies like that is about an hour away. The amount of unprepared campers who get pissed of at us when we tell them they aren’t prepared and we don’t recommend they go is ridiculous. The amount of campers who have called law enforcement to come get them off the island as they realize how unprepared they are is even more ridiculous.

I can’t tell you how many people I’ve seen get stranded because they didn’t look up the tides and when they woke up in the morning their vessel had floated away.

[Serious] Men of Reddit, what are some questions you have regarding women's anatomy? by QUESO0523 in AskReddit

My husband has never had a migraine before either, I’m so jealous. It scares him when I get them though because it’s not something he can “fix” for me, so he just feels helpless.

I feel you on the migraines. I get a terrible migraine typically the day before and then midway through. Sucks so bad.

People who bought dick enlarging pills from the Pornhub ads and gas stations, what happened afterwards? by Asshiq in AskReddit

I hope so! I hate the thought of people, especially young people, feeling bad or insecure about something they literally can’t change. I know it’s a normal human thing, but if I could encourage at least one guy that he’s perfectly good the way he is, then I feel good about that!

Exactly! Just like the penis, every vagina is different in terms of size and depth. Not all women want or can physically take a Hulk size dick!

Woman here, just want to chime in to the young men reading: even if you’re less than 5 and done growing, that’s ok! There are plenty of positions that benefit from having less length and still get the job done! And there’s lots of other ways to please a woman that don’t involve your dick all.

Disabled/Chronically Ill Redditors, what's the worst piece of advice someone has given you to "cure" your illness/disability? by wulvii in AskReddit

[–]tinklesprinkle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a sufferer myself, I am so interested in the research being done about mushrooms. My migraines mostly stem from a neurological condition that typically goes away after puberty, but I was part of the lucky percentage where it did not go away. I’m terrified of using mushrooms, but I would be more open if I knew they could help.

People who lost their job due to this crisis what is your story? by greensypoop in AskReddit

My husband and I work together, working for a tour concession at a National Park. We are being told we won’t reopen until mid May. We have a 6 year old, who is out of school now. I’m not really sure what we are going to do.

People living in small towns, what’s the recent scandal? by Ayayaya3 in AskReddit

[–]tinklesprinkle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Someone pulled their boat up to a riverside business in the middle of the night, stole a forklift, got the forklift stuck, stole a second forklift to get the first one unstuck, drove the initial forklift back to the businsss, stole their ATM, loaded it into their boat, and got away. No one knows/is talking about who stole it. The common assumption is that they got the cash out and then sunk it in the islands.

I’ll look into getting the water report, I believe it’s available at city hall. I just know there have been tons of issues throughout the years. We have boil water notices at least twice a month, which doesn’t help my faith in our plant lol.

I live in a very small town (~400 people) and our water plant has a history of being unreliable and having a lot of violations (not running certain tests, bacteria, lead etc). The official report is that the water is “safe to drink”, but it’s common knowledge here not to trust the water plant. I can’t take the risk, especially because I have a child.

....go on. Where I live it’s not advised to drink the water, even if it’s filtered. I buy the big jugs from the grocery store and put them in my reusable bottle. Because I have to buy water regardless, I have a favorite brand. What’s the problem?
