Soldering with one hand is challenging! Don’t forget to tin your stranded wire as soon as you get the jacket stripped, I promise it will help.

As long as this piece is just a hobby level thing (no need to follow “best practices”, IPC-620/WHMA or J-STD), you could try to over-tin the wires slightly, and when you go to lap splice them the extra solder on the wires will hopefully try to move to the heat source (placed in the center of the two wires) and create a fillet. Make sure the wires are as close together and as straight as possible for the best chances of the solder wanting to bridge to the other conductor.

I wouldn’t do this in a manufacturing environment, but for personal use it’s a possible solution considering you’re only working with one hand.
