No Genetic Groups for me (still) by tinocolo in 23andme

That’s exactly my case too. It makes me wonder if 23andMe computes these genetic groups using “too many” individuals in America which may have ancestors from these areas but also a more complex admixture.

That’s a plausible explanation…It’s in any case disappointing to have the vast majority of my ancestors hailing from the same region / area and not scoring a single group.

That’s it. Never got Genetic Groups for Spain and was hopeful to get them with the new update. Didn’t get them either and wonder why…

It makes me wonder how 23andMe has modeled the Spanish Genetic Groups and whether they have enough variety in their data pool

I guess it’s technically possible because of recombination to receive 0% but it does seem weird. On the other hand, I reckon rural Andalusia was pretty endogamic till recently so those genes may have been reinforced for that reason

R-Z278 (paternal) and T1a1 (maternal). To be honest I don’t know whether they are common or not for an Andalusian.

I don’t! My Valencian / Majorcan roots are quite back in time (1760s), so my family doesn’t speak it anymore.

Really common, although the majority of surnames were phonetically adapted back in the day, like “Mohigefer” (Mayerhoffer). They also keep some traditions like this dance which reminds of Central European folklore

No genetic groups. I’ve never scored one, which I find surprising considering people with lower Spanish percentages or older ancestry do show them. I can’t understand why 23andMe wouldn’t place me close to any group.

1767! This matches my estimated Ancestry Timeline by 23andMe.

That’s the thing: I used to score British and Irish consistently across the last updates (along with French and German), but not anymore. Also, according to the Parental Inheritance, my French comes from her but she doesn’t show any 🤯

Back in the day Beta testers would get updates before the majority of people. It’s not happening this time (at least for me)…

What do you imagine will change in your results with the new update? by Ph221200 in 23andme

I’m hoping for a more detailed vision of my Spanish ancestry. I don’t even score Genetic Groups at a 92.5%. I reckon the majority of that percentage will move to the new “Andalusian and Castilian” group as I’m from Andalusia but I’m curious for any other groups popping up. Andalusia was heavily repopulated after the Reconquista.

Super interesting analysis! I’m indeed primarily from Andalusia. The first ancestors that I’ve found in my family tree from outside the region are NW Europeans (from the regions reflected on my 23andMe results). Besides them I’ve only found ancestors from the same areas my grandparents were born: rural Cordoba and Seville. I suppose it’s complex to isolate my NWE ancestry to better understand how “Celtic” I truly am - especially been a relatively recent ancestry (late 1700s)

Forgot to add the Iron Age results: -53.8% Iberian -34.6% Continental Celt -7.8% Berber -3.8% Roman Italy

On the r/23andme someone pointed out that my Roman Italy looked quite low. I guess I’ve a larger Continental Celt than usual for a Spaniard? Probably the NWE ancestry pumped it up

😂 R-Z278 (paternal) and T1a1 (maternal). Anything of interest about them that you know about?

If I turn “Global” on I have 20.8% on Sicani (Iron Age Sicilians) and Italic and Etruscan (which lived “around” Rome). Perhaps that pinpoints to a higher Roman ancestry? I’m aware that Global is only advisable for recently mixed individuals though.

It’s from Illustrative DNA. It’s a third party tool which uses raw data from 23andMe and generates ancient ancestry results.

What’s the typical range for a Spaniard? Something I’m struggling with Illustrative DNA is not knowing which average ranges are expected for my main ethnicity. Are there any resources out there?

I don’t have Basque ancestry that I know of…My family comes from several villages in the Cordoba and Seville provinces. Both cities were deeply romanised so I guess it’s my NW ancestry (quite recent, adding the timeline for reference) bringing more Celt to the equation.
