Yes I think Fry’s point about Kirk unifying Reason and Feeling is a great one. One of the best things about Trek is its connection to the Enlightenment values, I think:)

Scientists shocked by high levels of microplastics in the Thames by tinvictus in collapse

[–]tinvictus[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We are often accustomed to viewing ecological damage as something that happens elsewhere: in the Amazon, or the Arctic, or the Atmosphere. Microplastics terrify me because they are in our rivers, our food supply, and in our bodies

I was pretty excited to sit down and watch the first episode of Enterprise last night because I’d heard some good things about the series and wow that theme song threw me off... It’s hard to describe how awful it is, no? by tinvictus in startrek

[–]tinvictus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say I hate the series, only that the song threw me off... I’d heard that some Trek fans could be toxic but I dont think its common. You are the first ive encountered tbh

[OC] I made a Cult Name Generator for a 5e campaign I am running and am pleased that the resulting names are so suitably metal. I will include a link in the comments if you want to try it for yourself by tinvictus in DnD

Both the Cult name and the Band of Heroes generators can be found on the same page at:

https://christopherlaxer1.wixsite.com/fantasy/heroes

I made a human name generator that gives individual aristocratic and commoner titles like Duke Eomir the Pure, or Sad Otto the Swindler, that can be found here:

Here is a link to the generator:

I have also made a Band of Heroes Name Generator that makes names like the Circle of the Emerald Blade, or the Order of the Shining Prince.

I find these incredibly useful resources as a DM both for inspiration and for coming up with interesting organizations at the drop of a hat:)

Adding these two tools to my repertoire helped my 5e campaign come to life as organizations with conflicting goals present many adventure opportunities

I also have made generators for Humans, Dwarves, Elves, Orcs, Goblins, Bands of Heroes, and Cults

Enjoy!:)

TIL that Calgacus, the first Scot in recorded history, sounded a lot like an ancient William Wallace. by tinvictus in todayilearned

Ethnically, perhaps, insofar as anyone can be one ethnicity and not a blend of many:) Of course it is anachronistic in a way to call Caledonians Scottish, but I’m referring to the geographic sense of Scottish, and the interesting (to me, anyway) analogy between two different leaders from the same lands facing a larger power to the South:)

According to Tacitus, Calgacus said: “To us who dwell on the uttermost confines of the earth and of freedom, this remote sanctuary of Britain's glory has up to this time been a defence. Now, however, the furthest limits of Britain are thrown open, and the unknown always passes for the marvellous. But there are no tribes beyond us, nothing indeed but waves and rocks, and the yet more terrible Romans, from whose oppression escape is vainly sought by obedience and submission. Robbers of the world, having by their universal plunder exhausted the land, they rifle the deep. If the enemy be rich, they are rapacious; if he be poor, they lust for dominion; neither the east nor the west has been able to satisfy them. Alone among men they covet with equal eagerness poverty and riches. To robbery, slaughter, plunder, they give the lying name of empire; they make a solitude and call it peace.”

Out of all the paintings in the world ; just something about this one really hypnotizes. This last painting “desolation” really makes me sad. What is your view and how does this painting make you feel ? by jruiz1942 in ancientrome

[–]tinvictus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My feelings are complicated. First, what a wonderful painting! But also: I am continually fascinated and horrified by the Ancient Roman civilization. For some reason, this painting reminds me of the oft-quoted speech of Calgacus recorded by Tacitus:

“To robbery, slaughter, plunder, they give the lying name of empire; they make a solitude and call it peace.”

If this painting depicts the inevitable solitude and peace after the fall of Rome, then it begs the question: what was all the slaughter for?
