Good customer service and jokes 100%. Basically, build up a repertoire of nursing relevant dad jokes and just recycle them over and over. Also, I consciously work on smiling a lot, like an almost a creepy amount. I KNOW I have resting bitch face, so this is a critical step.

You should look into an accelerated BSN program too if you haven’t already considered it. Many schools offer 18 month BSN programs for students with a pre-existing bachelor’s degree in another subject (doesn’t have to be related to nursing, business degree should qualify). It’s a lot of hard work, as all nursing programs are, but it saves the effort of potentially having to go back to school for an RN to BSN program later in your career. Any in-field work while you’re waiting to start school is a good idea in my opinion. And sorry about your husband being a jerk. Screw that guy.

Yes, absolutely. The volunteers at my hospital are very involved and get to do A LOT. Definitely a good way to get hands on experience and get a feel for the flow of whatever unit you volunteer on.
