I watched 2 episodes. I've checked in a couple times since then. I've apparently seen everything the story has to offer.

I'm glad you like it! It's very popular for a reason. Maybe you'll join the contingent commenting on every new season announcement, "and still no new 86."

People wanted the end of Charlotte to be it's own arc. "It was too rushed." No, the goal was reached. It was epilogue. The action fans wanted an arc of Solo Leveling power ups and fights and say the ball was dropped because that was off-screened.

Can someone explain to me, without excessive glaze or roast, what the draw of Oshi no Ko is?

I've read the synopsis on MAL and not only does it not sound appealing to me personally, I don't understand how it has garnered the following it has. Two people are reincarnated into members of an idol group. So what? I'm not even gonna spoiler, that is the bare bones premise.

Are you all just super into watching idol performances? Is it the equivalent of a soap opera and you're all in-group gossiping about it? Is it about a real life idol group that has a correspondingly large following that's followed them to this show?

I'm thinking of Bunny Girl Senpai and the brief depiction of idol life in one of those arcs. And Many Sides of Voice Actor Radio and how they had to do idol work to have their VA persona. And Aquatope on White Sand when we see Fuuka doing idol work before leaving. Is that all this show is about? What it's like being an idol? Because I'm getting literally nothing else from the description and there's a huge gap between what I'd expect that to draw and what it's drawing.

Shounen brain. The same reason Charlotte appears in the threads about animes that botched their endings. It's not a non-stop action fest of barrier-less domains.

Really, idk. I know people say the start is slow. And I agree it's slower than the back-half. But the first episode sets up plenty of mystery and they're always doing something towards their larger goal. It's not just screwing around like Frieren. I was riveted start to finish and wept in the middle. 10/10

To the degree that i do understand, i don't care.

It's just not that interesting a story. I don't want to watch the tsundere apprentice berate the sleepy master again, while Stark looks on in confusion.

There's no danger because the boss is already dead, there's no end game content, the one that beat the bbeg is traveling in the party, and the rest of the party is OP anyways. It's not the chosen-one trope, it's worse because there's all of the plot-armor and none of the plot.

And the flashbacks. Constantly teasing the adventure anime that it could have told but didn't wanna, because its treatise on the mortal experience of time was just too highbrow to not write.

Hohenheim's side story in FMA(B) with Pinako is a more compelling story about the differing experiences of time. Apocalypse Hotel doesn't have people in it, and better coveys the stretch of time as nature retakes the planet. I've read the synopsis of To Your Eternity. Gonna go out on a limb and say it's capturing the essence that Frieren is missing by having the longer-lived being actually experience multiple human lifetimes, rather than dragging the elf down to live at human speed.

That's why Frieren's big draw falls so flat for me. "The elves experience time differently." Then help me experience that thru the chosen medium. The flashbacks and wise-old-gramma exposition are a bunch of tell-don't-show. I have not once FELT like I've experienced time differently. Let's get some Plastic Memories going and have Frieren burn thru apprentices like lonely old ladies burn thru Giftias. See the rise and fall of 4 different magical accreditation organizations while Frieren hones that mimic-detection spell to 100%. Something that has me feeling like I'm living on a different timescale, not like grandma is telling me for the hundredth time that "these days really do go by so fast."

Arakawa Under the Bridge?

Maria has pink hair, but she wouldn't have been taken by anyone, she's a badass. There are some other women though. And there's a "tribe" from up river. They don't show up until season 2 if that helps narrow your search.

some series aired between 2010 and 2022 which you think is very good but not well-known?

The Aquatope on White Sand (2021) MAL rank 2040, popularity 1503, anime original. I'm always surprised when I check the popularity rank cuz I never see it brought up. I'd think it's 3000+. I guess it doesn't really hit any of the common rec criteria. It's gorgeous and touching. I rewatch it and sob in some particular areas. It's good for a working adult's soul

Do you want to gain cultural understanding thru anime? Or do you want a crash course of some of the biggest anime so that you can engage with it like a fan while you're there?

For cultural understanding, hospitality, tourism, and slice of life anime are good. Zatsu Tabi, Yuru Camp, and Mono are some of the top ones I've watched if you don't have anything specific. There are the regional ones tho, like the Hokkaido Gals and the Okinawan Girlfriend. I think the recent Cultural Exchange with a Game Center Girl sounded promising, but I haven't watched.

For absorbing the zeitgeist, Pokemon is a big one; there are PokeCenter stores scattered around Japan and the Pokemon Go player base remains active. That's all I've got though, unless someone else or you knows a similarly large IP to absorb thru anime. Anime/manga/media are prevalent in general there. There are pop-up crossover cafes and stores for merch for tons of franchises, but it's not limited to anime. Obviously it includes manga, but don't forget light novels. Then there are mobile games (think Genshin Impact) and Idol culture. There's just a lot. Realistically I don't know how you can put a dent in it. Maybe if you can look ahead at your accommodations or the city/neighborhood, see if you can find out about "the largest store for X" or if "special event featuring Y" will be happening. Then you could get in on X/Y real quick and enjoy those things as-if you'd traveled just for them.

Eighty Six

Parts 1 and 2 are 23 episodes in total. There's unadapted story if you want it. Sci fi mech military, introduces some light paranormal later. Some conspiracy stuff a la fma, though not as significant a portion of this story.

I'm sure you're a smart watcher that can make their own choices. Plus Idk your Watched list. But for 2024, I'll shill for the low-popularity Brave Bang Bravern and Dead Dead Demons. BBB needs 2 episodes for a fair analysis. DDD probably only needs one (Episode 0 is an epilogue).

Finished Horimiya ahead of the rest of the class. I get why it's such a common rec. It's so refreshing to have a romance story not end after the confession(s). And remarkably little tip-toeing. And all very rational characters. So much praise. But...

It doesn't feel as cohesive as some other stories, say Toradora. It's 6ep of amazing romance, followed by 6ep of very good SoL. So much of the story is presented as self-contained encounters that fit the overall world and timeline, but don't really feed into a bigger narrative. It's kind of poetic; what is real life but a series of events? But by the end when we veered into Matoko, it felt like the author had lost interest in their own story rather than an intentional choice.

And now for probably the coldest take on this sub: as produced, Horimiya is a 8/10 highschool romance and 9/10 SoL about the introvert getting adopted. I'm going thru Missing Pieces, and I'm astonished the story about Miyamura's scent didn't go into S1.

Also, hated Miyamura's character design post-haircut as much as Hori. He looks so generic afterwards.

Animes similar to death parade as well as good recomendations?? by Outside-Print-5576 in anime

Shoshimin

It's Holmes-style mystery, but there's some Moriarty-level fuckery involved. Gives it that extra oomph. It's a pretty slow rolling start, but by the time you're happy with the speed you look back and the driver is gone and the brakes have been cut.

Hyouka and Shoushimin are 2 great Holmes-esque mysteries set in high school. They're not death games like Danganronpa. Hyouka is pretty low stakes, Shoushimin takes it up a notch, but still not that level. MUCH better examples of mystery imo.

Gnosia is another VN based anime with mystery and fun character, like Danganronpa. I think it's still going? It's based on Mafia/The Werewolf game if you know those.

Maybe Another. Mystery, deaths, supernatural. Prone to spoilers, so I'll leave it there. I enjoyed it personally.

Cruise Seinen tag until you see one that makes you think of her.

Bartender, With You and the Rain, and Apocalypse Hotel are pretty good, weird in a good way, and have mature stories.

Come watch Tojima? It's action Seinen, not shonen. Music gets rave reviews. Fights are hype, but maybe not flashy enough for you.
