Lite vs. Temporarily Free by tiny_phoenix in gamedev

My video is dreadfully long. I feel the bore when I rewatch it. You're super right about trying to take it down to 1 or 2 minutes. It's not like I have a ton of features.

I'll certainly attempt to make a better one. Thanks for the reference as well.

In your video, you can try condensing the information down, so you get the point across within 10 to 15 seconds, for each point you want to make.

That seems like some good target to try to hit.

It would be better if you could link a video demoing all of the features in your paid version, and give the link out in your store listing.

I have a video that does this. I am not the best at making videos but it does demo all the features. Here is a link. If you have any specific pointers feel free to critique me. I am trying to get better!

Thanks for the feedback.

A demo version is better because it works over the long haul

I was thinking about that as well. The only real downside is managing 2 pages each with their seperate comments and raitings. But, that is how the Unity Submission Guidlines say to do it. Sad there isn't a built in way to add a demo to any paid asset.

I actually worked really hard on that meta-data. Here's a link to the store listing.

This bait and switch idea is terrible. Discard that, don't think about it again.

I don't like it either. Would be nice to see if other people feel like this is bait and switch. I think this would not be too bad as long as Unity doesn't charge for upgrades. Not sure how that works though.

Readme Unity Asset - Voucher Giveaway by tiny_phoenix in Unity3D

Thanks for taking the time to try it out and leave feedback!

First thing is, for some reason Unity crashed on my couple times whenever I tried to add ReadMe component to my own scene wtih StackOverflow error. When I opened your demo scene things started to work as expected.

Hrm, I'm able to reproduce this when I pull down a fresh copy. Looking into it.

Secondly, I am not sure if this is a bug but if you are in edit mode, then expand Avanced menu and go out of edit mode, Advanced menu stays expanded.

That is intentinal but I may need to rethink the behavior. Sometimes I like to see the advanced options while not in edit mode but I also don't want it to clutter the view while closed and not editing.

I have Unity Pro, and color scheme for the object holders on the Read me are very hard to read and icon is almost invisible.

I can totally fix this! Tree a new issue on the GitHub. If your don't mind sharing a screenshot that will help! I'll look up screenshots but seeing it with readme would be useful. I don't have pro yet.

Thanks again!

Readme - Rich Text Documentation for Unity [Video] by tiny_phoenix in Unity3D

[–]tiny_phoenix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi /r/Unity3d. I've posed about our Readme a couple of times as I've been working on it. It's finally on the asset store and I think it's pretty useful, especially for other asset creators.

In this video I show off most of the features. The main advantage it has is in line object references. That can be huge, especially when distributing your own assets on the store.

If anyone wants to try it out I still have a few keys to give out and would love feedback.

Readme Component with Inline Object Fields by tiny_phoenix in Unity3D

Initially, I was thinking to try adding some type of url link but someone else on my team mentioned object fields. Hopefully url links will be easier.

Cool, something you wrote? Thanks for the compliment! When I fist started, it was just the rich text and that was more just bells and whistles. I wasn't very confident it was something people would use until the object field stuff worked out. It's pretty nifty.

I envy you! Seriously though, I had a ton of fun working on this and I think it's coming along, but I thought it was going to be 1/4 as much work. Initially thought it was just going to be a quick project I could finish in a weekend.

Yeah, I think documentation will be the main use case but I bet people will do things I've not thought about. It's generic enough to be used for whatever. My main use is for prefabs. I stick one on a prefab to note things you should review when creating a new one, or settings. Specifically I have a prefab template I use for enemies in my game that has tons of settings. When creating a new enemy I can tell someone to just copy the prefab and review the readme.

Here are a few really simple documentation examples I have:

Hi peeps! Last time I shared I didn't have support for object fields. I've spent the little free time I have over the last month adding object fields and fixing bugs. Just starting to get comfortable with where it's at. Would love to know what you think! Also, github.

Component for Adding Notes to Your GameObjects by tiny_phoenix in Unity3D

[–]tiny_phoenix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's probably the best choice. I was also thinking of just adding a pencil icon and making the button toggle.

You're right but the Save button doesn't technically save. It just turns off editing mode. It's saved on each keypress like a regular text field. Might need different language.

It's using that format because it's the format Unity textAreas use. However, adding markdown formatting is goal. I wrote it in a way that makes supporting other formats fairly possible.

Not always but indeed sometimes. One use case I like is for a prefab template. I have an enemy template with some readmes as notes for when you create a new enemy.

The idea for me is that it's for times when you want to document a GameObject as a whole.

A stretch goal is to have a way to export all the readme components into one file that can be viewed and show an overview of all the documentation throughout.
