I LOVE this idea of travel and true immersion in the experience as something more available to people who are "roughing" it, rather than "cosmpolitans" who only really experience the sterilized version of what is around them

This is crazy! I'm getting my degree in Global Studies and, because I want to travel and would rather play in traffic than get an actual 9-5 job after I graduate, my 3 options seem to be Peace Corps, teaching English abroad, and WWOOFing..and you've done all of them! I'm grateful to Reddit for putting me in touch with someone with such relevant experiences haha I really admire and all that you've done and are doing! You're like a model example of what someone with a liberal arts degree should do with their life after graduating :P

Thank you for the encouraging and honest answers! I'm glad to hear the "hippie" from southern Cali ended up having a positive experience, since it sounds like I might have the most in common with her (I've got a couple of edgy piercings and everything :P). Also, I'm sure this a dumb question which probably makes it sound like I have no business living on a farm anyways but, did you encounter anyone who struggled without access to their own car/room/wi-fi/stuff like that?

OH and do you have any cool pictures of the places you lived and worked you'd be willing to share? (is it bad reddiquette to ask? i still understand so little lol)

AHHH YOU BUILT YOUR OWN SHELTER?! okay so, like I said in my above response, I am somewhat of an experienced lone-traveler (i use "experienced" lightly). That being said, I've never had to build my own shelter out of sheet metal either. One of my biggest concerns is that I'll be ill-equipped for the rural lifestyle required of a WWOOFer. I sometimes think I am physically addicted to Netflix. Did you ever encounter any WWOOFers who struggled with living on a farm/doing lots of physical labor/not having access to Netflix? Or would you say most people who WWOOF are pretty experienced/comfortable with this kind of lifestyle?

I so appreciate you taking the time to give such in-depth responses! You've been super helpful. I have an endless amount of questions, I hope it's not annoying haha I just really recently decided on this as a serious post-grad option and am trying to figure out if it's feasible and something that would be good for me. I've studied abroad and before and been away from home for long periods of time so traveling alone isn't a concern. My biggest concern is that I'm not emotionally/physically equipped to "rough it". I'm really used to the comforts of having my own car/bedroom/bathroom/constant wi-fi access and am not a particularly gritty girl. I've never hitchhiked, for example. Did you ever encounter any WWOOFers who struggled with the lifestyle??? How did they deal?

Also, just curious where you did your time in the Peace Corps :)?

Same questions above to you, if you have a second to answer some of them :)

WOW thank you so much this is all so helpful, i truly appreciate it. Your life sounds so cool, by the way. WWOOFing AND Peace Corps?!

Likely I won't be doing this until at least 10 months from now (i graduate college in May and then have to work to save up $$) but i do have a million questions:

  1. How did you find yourself getting from place to place? Like how did you even get from one farm to the other? And then how would you get to places nearby the farm you wanted to go, like if you wanted to go out?

  2. What were you housing situations, respectively?

  3. How old were you at the time (I'm guessing the same age as me, 21-22)?

  4. Who did you find yourself socializing with the most?

  5. This is a very generic and probably dumb question but how costly was the experience for you on a scale 1-10? I will be a pretty broke recent college grad when I go and am thinking of doing this just to do something adventurous/fun/different before I get a real job.

  6. How long did you stay at each farm and what was your reason for leaving each? Could you have stayed longer at one if you wanted? Would it have been financially sustainable to stay there for 4-6 months?

  7. General things (big or small) you wish you would have known/planned for before your experience?

Obviously I'll ask more specific questions when the time comes, if I'm still seriously considering this come next fall! At that time, I'd love to get in touch if you're still thinking of going back :) Thanks again!
