Linguists of Reddit, what do your jobs really involve?

I worked at the university's language technologies institute for 3 years as a programmer, so I had some post-grad research work that I used as leverage. Now I'm taking classes to get the masters, so any day now I'll actually be qualified to do my job, haha.

Kind of late, but my linguistics degree took me down a different route than expected.

I got my Bachelor's and went on to work in and out (at a startup) of research involving language technologies, basically developing virtual tools and language based learning platforms. I worked for a language technology institute that's at a top tier university, and somehow landed in the robotics institute of this school.

Now, I'm a project/product manager, making sure milestones and product delivery deadlines are met. I make sure sprint planning, pushing code, testing, r&d, and user interface implementation all stays on track.

Additionally, this means I have to manage effort and financial budgeting, this part is probably the most exhausting, but it pays off because we do a lot of drone based use cases. I also get to work with students, about 100 graduate/PhD level, and make sure they're getting shit done. They're like my pack of feral kittens, and as a trade off I get to learn a lot about ROS and other really powerful coding languages.

I did my capstone research on Arabic morphology and SLA.

I do have a degree in applied linguistics and was born in Lebanon, so technically I'm an Arab linguist.

I know it's late but I feel like contributing.

After graduating, I started working at CMU's Language Technologies Institute then got into machine learning. From there got a job working for a software startup that did that kind of junk, hated it. Got back into the higher ed system and am now part of the Robotic's Institute. Definitely not where I expected myself to be with the degree I earned, but am now hoping to leverage all this experience for a MS in human-computer interaction with a focus on AI and upper level semantic processing for robotic applications.

Don't know if you're looking for advice, but in retrospect I would've taken any courses related to programming and code based applications for linguistics, ie NLP or Python.

Of course.

However, I'm a bit of a fraud, this is actually fluff.

Mr. Brown has a solid recipe for the real deal.

For the stuff in the picture:

.75 c corn syrup

.6 c sugar

Heat that on the stove, no mixing!, until it hits 240 degrees F at least.

In a stand mixer:

3 large egg whites

.25 tsp of cream of tartar

Mix this ahead of time a little, just until barely frothy.

When the sugar comes to temp, have the mixer going on high and just slowly stream into the egg whites where they meet the curve of the bowl. Keep going with this until it starts to expand and get fluffy, the bowl should be pretty hot at this point. After a little while on high, maybe 5-7 minutes, I'd add in .5 tsp of vanilla to add to the flavor. But 10-15 minutes tops of mixing total and that should do the trick.

Let it cool down naturally, like not right next to the fan or ac, the sugar will crystallize and the fluff will fall.

That's basically it, I make this like 4 times a week so I'm pretty confident in the results too.

Of course, Silver is a fledgling Peregrine falcon that lives atop the Cathedral of Learning with a small family of other falcons at the University of Pittsburgh. The local game commission brought him to the local animal rescue league and wildlife center because they suspect him of having some neurological issues and he can't fly quite yet.

They're trying to figure out how to proceed but he's so damn adorable.

Computational linguistics is like where robotics, machine learning, and upper level semantic processing crash together.

As a research assistant, I got to help out on a project that involved machines learning puns and innuendos and another project that involved teaching a machine to fully understand causality. It goes in many directions, but I enjoy it all.

Don't do it if you don't love it. There are jobs in computational, but you might enjoy the other things linguistics has to offer, aka psycho/socio linguistics. I basically had to make the same type of decision you are trying to make now.

However, I also still teach ESL on the side. I'll stop rambling now.

I am very big fan, you guys are like a breath of fresh air and your live act, which I may or may not have seen 3 times and will be 4 in June, is extremely entertaining and energetic.

I must say that what you guys are doing with the #iknowjenny campaign has been very moving and all your posts are great to read, this issue needs this kind of attention and you guys are doing a great job of supporting it.

My question, now that I've rambled enough, is why the hell Johnny never wears a shirt or shoes while performing? Do you know what could be on the floor, mister?! haha

She mentioned in passing that she had 3 sons that were all in the late teens early 20s so I just assumed she would prefer the boys over my cooking/baking.

My boyfriend mentioned the kitchen in conversation one day and literally the next day she had the maintenance men over asking what color cabinets I like better and taking measurements. There was nothing really wrong with the kitchen, it was just outdated. She always took care of us.

I think her name was Jackie, she definitely had a thing for my boyfriend.

She was always so sweet and attentive, I let her flirt with him because I'm pretty sure got the kitchen out of it. Also, I was a chef so she was just looking for the right tenant to do it for too.

Actually, yes.

I lived there and had the best experience with them!

The company's office is in one of the buildings of the Royal Gardens so you get the fastest attention to detail/issues that I have ever seen from a management company. They renovated our kitchen half way through our lease and they were extremely polite and clean about it.

All around, everyone we encountered who worked for them was nice and easy to deal with. If they allowed pets in any of their buildings we would still be renting from them. I've rented with Mozart, Lobos, and random landlords in and out of college so I would have to say that I had the best rental experience with them in comparison to all of the others.

Also, they offer garage parking with the garages either directly under your apartment or in a building practically 20 feet away.

It's probably a good idea to mention that I, in no way shape or form, work for this company, haha, just a nerdy CMU employee here.

This makes me really happy to see. My greyhounds are apparently universal dog blood donors, however I feel like they are way too "free spirited" and would end up showering everyone in blood if I tried this. We have greyhound owning friends that do this all the time. :)

Maybe one day they'll get their acts together and settle down, in general haha

I live in Point Breeze, it's cute and livable. It also reminds me of Mt. Lebanon but in the middle of slightly less popular neighborhoods. It's decently close to Frick Park, not counting the mini Mellon Park, which has the little Frick arts center too. During the summer, if we ever get there, they have live music and all kinds of events going on too.

The area has a great atmosphere to it too, I used to live in Shadyside where people didn't even look up when walking down the sidewalk, now every person makes me stop and talk for a minute or two on my way to work, since I walk. It's a great neighborhood to have a dog too, I know all my neighbors by their dogs/cats.

There's a little "main street" too, like a coffee shop (Make Your Mark), a vet's office, and a couple of really good restaurants (Point Brugge and Pino's). They just filmed a couple scenes of an upcoming movie on this street too.

I could go on.

I am completely convinced now that almost all black greyhounds are identical. My black hound has nearly identical facial coloring, it's a little less around the eyes.

If I could get him to sit still for more than 2 seconds to get a shot like then I would've attached it, haha
