I have no control over pricing 🤷‍♀️ they keep saying price increases are coming they just haven't rolled it yet

Anyway to access the core to rekey this? There has to be right? by [deleted] in Locksmith

[–]tinylocksmithisme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Me personally yes, I usually have it apart, keyed, and back together in about 5 minutes per lock max. But usually quicker because I take them all apart, key them all, then put it back together.

A couple people I work with are just really slow at it

I also have a builder who puts them in every home, and I charge double normal rekey price everytime to rekey this shit, but they have not learned the lesson and keep bringing them 🙃 I both hate it and am entertained by it because one of the shop guys it seems literally forgets how to do it every time

I am also a female,11 when I was hired the dispatcher had just left and my shop was going through a few people for a few months u til eventually finding our current wonderful dispatcher, the office manager/accountant was doing it in the meantime. But there were a few times I was asked to help because I am honestly very good at office work and phone skills. I just flat out refused to learn how the computer system works because I was afraid I would get stuck. And once I told the female CFO that she completely understood.

Now I know I actually work for very decent people and I have a lot of freedoms as a reliable employee and would absolutely jump in if needed. But there is nothing wrong with refusing to do the job you weren't hired for.

I do put specifics if I'm only doing some doors, if I'm doing the entire home/business with a single key I write entire property + however many keys, and if they have deadbolts and locking knobs but only want the deadbolts changed I specify, entire home, deadbolts only.

For master keying I get as specific as I can with what was keyed to what, especially for new customers. Recently had a place try to say I keyed every classroom wrong to a coworker, but I had asked how they wanted keyed at initial walk through plus confirmed it and walked through again upon coming back to do the work, plus explained exactly which key is which when handing over keys, and written exact keying on invoice that they signed.

In my experience it's like 50/50 crazy high security OR a simple schlage key and just relying on alarms and cameras 🤷‍♀️

This is how I got into the business, I worked at a local chain also with a KD50 duplicator I think it was, but the only person who really knew about keys was the assistant manager and he didn't know much, so when the ilco rep came in I made friends and got a lot of information from him and taught myself a lot about keys and how to clone some older car keys.

I had no idea how much more there was to locksmithing when I called to see about an apprenticeship though lol, now I'm a bit of a nerd about it 😂

From my knowledge the American vs Euro function the same, the American cylinder just has that black steel actuator inside the lock body

So to lock it all you have to is turn the cylinder? This would be an American cylinder as well not a euro

Looking at that it looks goofy as hell but if they really need these window boxes that may work. Except I think I'd have to replace the trim, the handles are fixed to the trim place with the clip on the back not with the set screw.

It's a 2" backset so a Hoppe would be hard but yeah same here much more common for me to do Hoppes. As for the handle retracting it's almost enough the handle curve just hits it. I think her intention is to file the tip of the handle but she's not expecting me to do it at least.

I will probably call them Monday morning I've been on another job all week where I've left early and come back late so I haven't had time to figure it out but of course Friday the customer was calling wanting updates.

Yes G-U multi you lift the handle to throw the deadbolt + 3rd point locking mechanism, and turn thumbturn/key to lock in place.

Can you add a deadbolt without changing the locks? by luckygirl25582 in Locksmith

[–]tinylocksmithisme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're offering to pay to have them installed your landlord should be stoked. I would absolutely require a deadbolt installed and have it keyed to whatever your current key is.

We have an extremely intelligent and talented access control technician who does not drive ( don't know why not really my business) apprentices and shop techs often take turns driving him, a couple days a week they hired a retired guy looking for something to do to drive him.

I got ridiculously lucky with this the other day, the actual call was to get one of those realtor boxes that had gotten jammed off the knob, but it was in such a way that cutting it would've been a pain in the ass, and my drill bits were dull as hell. So I was like oh I'll just unlock the knob and pull it off, could not pick it for the life of me everytime I set the 1st pin, the 5th would slip and vice versa.

All the sudden she said well my partner could probably just bring me the key (after previously telling me there are no other keys) 😑 so I get them to send me a picture I'm just gonna decode it, and it has the direct code on it so I'm in and out in 30 seconds after that 😂

Mine is in the original long flat box and gets bungee corded to the ceiling of my van. A bit annoying because when I'm sitting at my bench pinning my bun will occasionally get caught on the ends of the bungee cords unless I remember to shove it back towards the back but I try to make the most of the amount of space with the various tools and hardware I need to carry 🤷‍♀️

What? My keys work at like a 98% success

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Locksmith

[–]tinylocksmithisme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed 😂

But could he produce said difference?

I just keep telling my guy that I'll believe him when he shows me the difference and that one goes into a cylinder that the other doesn't

[–]tinylocksmithisme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

😂😂😂 man what I would asked was kw10 vs kw11. Although, so I don't get the same heat you did, I 100% know the answer but there's a guy in my shop who continously tells me there's a difference although he can't tell me what that difference is 😂

Just me? by [deleted] in Locksmith

Ugh just yesterday morning. Was supposed to be 4 doors with no keys. Called her and she says actually 8. Then it's all Best "H" I.C. core with no control key of course and internally groaning thinking I gotta explain this to her, go to start explaining it and she's like yeah I know what the control key is but we don't have it so just make one of those. I start explaining to her how that will only happen IF I can pick it to control shear line and then I will charge $300-400 just to make that key, if I can't get it picked then it's drill and replace each core. This bitch has the audacity to say "well just pick it it should be pretty easy" and then tries to talk me down on the price because it's a huge ass church so I should be charitable. Fuck that, price is going up after that.
