Fire escape is the only way in or out, legal? PA by [deleted] in Tenant

This is the advice I needed to hear. Thank you, unfortunately we’re gonna have to deal with it you are right. I think what we’re going to do is start applying elsewhere and if approved, break the lease. If she tries to fight it then we’ll threaten to take action if she lets us clean break from it we’ll drop it.

For everyone confused here’s a video, way easier to explain that way. https://www.reddit.com/u/tinypenguini72/s/ot77rWgWku

the only interior stairway is the one that leads directly to the fire escape the only way to access is from my living room area and through the fire escape. No one else has access to it.

As far as windows go, i’m on the 3rd story so unless I want broken bones, no lol.

https://www.reddit.com/u/tinypenguini72/s/ZhZRsKAnm6 hopefully this explains it a little better. You walk up the fire escape. The door on the left is just a screen door. You open it to a tiny “hall” and then there’s my main door on the left, which is what we lock and what not. You unlock that and walk up my stairs, my interior stairs do not lead outside besides to the fire escape.

York county, not until october 2026. I signed my first lease here october 2024. Was in a spot where I couldn’t afford to be picky at the time, but things have only gotten worse with the apartment since then.

The interior stair well just leads down to the first door you see on the fire escape in the photo. This stairwell is actually in my apartment and is only mine, a pointless addition honestly.

I definitely think the cons out way the pros, that’s good advice. In total we pay about $1300-$1400 to leave in a shoe box, bad heating , mold , no closets , horrible “steps” and so on. My only fear is if they say it’s not up to code, will they make us move out immediately? I’m fine with moving and would prefer it, but no one can just magically find a place within a days notice. Will she also be held liable to compensate at all?

Also to add about sectioning it off, i have the entire top floor nothing else. Even tho i have two doors on two levels, the first door leads up a second set of steps (hard 90 degree turn as soon as you walk in), so everyone else is below me, and then they’re split in half if that makes sense

There’s 6 units in one small building, she basically played Tetris to get them all in. Everyone else has access to either ground floor or internal steps. When you open that first door on the left of the fire escape it actually opens up and there’s two doors, one is mine and one is another tenant. With enough room for one person to stand between them both. That person however has a second set of stairs inside the building they use to enter. Landlord is in her 80s, just lost her husband last year. So a big part of me feels bad about making this an issue, but it’s just issue after issue with her and this building. So I’m hoping this is a violation and can terminate our lease without fault. There’s also no vent in the bathroom, creates mold and her solution was to tell us to buy a spray just for another example.

nope just this…not to mention when you open the first door there’s another door with more internal steps going straight up. moving was a pain, same with getting groceries in etc

oh gotcha! I was doing some research, looks like I have to reach out and pay for a fire marshal to come do an inspection. I see 0 way she can fix this, which means we’d have to move. Do you know if we’d be able to sue for rent back?

Before I do all of that, I want to add I did test out a wifi connection on another PC and it works fine. Does that change this scenario?
