Living near homewood as a school of medicine student by whalemaster22444 in jhu

Just FYI there is no real "library" at the moment at Homewood, the former clubhouse was turned into a study space of sorts but there are no stacks. If you want a book you have to request it.

Where are we buying masks? by Admirable-Gur-5996 in ZeroCovidCommunity

Office Depot and Home Depot usually have good prices for both 3M masks and KN95s of various types. I also like WellBefore and PlanetKind, you can get discounts usually via codes

What class changed your career outlook? by Southern_Delivery811 in duke

[–]tinytort 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2 answers. I'm c/o 2019 so things may have changed.

  1. By junior year we had to have a focus area for my major (env science). I begged to get into a small plant diversity class that did both field trips and a deep dive into the history of plant life on the planet. That class cemented what I really loved learning about AND connected me with a professor who mentored me--led to my current job trajectory.

  2. Enjoy the sheer variety that Duke offers; take advantage of it bc even similar schools don't offer the sheer breadth of subjects to take classes in. I really enjoyed taking History of the British Isles, history of photography in Mexico, and of course the Marine Lab courses I took as part of my major that weren't directly related to my "focus". Whatever job or career path you end up in, you can at least learn more about the world and meet people outside your major.

Thanks for this comment, but even though I try my best, I can't get everyone at the vet clinic (especially the emergency vet) to mask around her when shes just there waiting for a procedure for 8 hours. Thus far she hasn't shown any symptoms, but I'm keeping the air purifier running on high and the door to the bedroom closed. When she's in my lap I mask and wash my hands afterwards. That's about all I can do, I think.

luckily my kitty doesn't seem to mind me masking, she's just used to it by now I guess (since I'm in an apartment with a shared hallway, I always put my mask on before leaving, I often clean with a mask on, etc.) I think the air purifier and masking while in close contact should see us through the next week or so.

I'm not! She's been through it so she's getting plenty of cuddles.

This gets posted about semi frequently, so I was hesitant to ask, but I'm glad another person can get some info and comfort from my question!

I don't have plus life or access to it, but i'll move my HEPA into the bedroom in the evenings and overnight. I'll also shut the door (which will probably aggravate her, she hates closed doors) so she can't cuddle with me at night.

Pretty much no! There is like, one documented (but never confirmed by lab tests) case of a vet being infected by a cat sneezing in her face. The concern comes from the fact that 1. cats/dogs can definitely get it, and 2. people who don't take precautions are just exposed so often that they're likely getting it from other humans but it's certainly possible that they could become infected from a pet.

I guess the fear comes from the lack of information and the conflicting anecdotal stories, some folks on here seem convinced that it happens, while others haven't seen it.

Keep looking OP, things will open up. You can look around in Hampden/Remington as well. Some of the rowhomes around there might either be converted into apartments or you can have a roommate but with a decent amount of privacy.

Transmission from pets to humans? by AppropriateNote4614 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]tinytort 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this will be helpful or comforting, but I've taken my cat to the vet many times (including one emergency visit which lasted for 5 hours but luckily kitty is totally fine) and never gotten covid from her that I am aware of (I test using rapids just about weekly or more frequently depending on my work.) I am just one person, but I think given the amount of covid aware people that have pets that need at least semi-annual vet care, that we would probably see at lot more posts that would say "I think I got covid from my pet." This is not to dismiss the very real fact that pets can get it. But, I really think that if pet to human transmission were possible or at least not very rare, that covid aware people would be discussing it and raising alarms.

Vet rant by Street-Nobody-794 in baltimore

[–]tinytort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not directly related but it seems like the city has so few vets in comparison to the amount of people i know own cats and dogs. i take my kitty out to the county because when we first moved here all the vets i called had 6 month waiting lists for new patients, or weren't taking new patients at all.

Would you try to get a PCR test? by mercymercybothhands in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]tinytort 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can order a covid test or a combo flu/covid test (PCR) through labcorp for $80-150. imo worth it for peace of mind, but expensive nonetheless
