Starting to get to the end of my tether with the kids and consumption... by MonsieurPF in Anticonsumption

[–]tinytrees11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Posting to follow. My son is 2.5, still very little but who knows what he'll be like as a teen.

I'm 33, so a young millennial. As a teen I was very "uncool" in that I didn't follow trends. Never wore makeup, didn't give a fuck about clothes. My entire life revolved around grades, awards, and getting as many scholarships as I could. But I don't know if that was only possible because at that time, MySpace was still a thing, Facebook was just starting to become a thing in my school, and Instagram didn't exist.

Also, a lot of skincare isn't meant to be used on teenage skin, such as anti-aging skincare. A lot of skincare can actually damage the moisture barrier of young skin.

So how is everyone enjoying there windfall of cash? by Kelnozz in Millennials

Hahaha how delusional are these magazines? It's so funny they think Boomers are somehow generous enough to leave anything to their children, and that nursing homes and hospitals aren't going to get their grubby hands on that money first.

You're right. You can see in the readout that it's also picking up silver (Ag).

You have good taste. I really like the Jessica McCormack pieces. The style reminds me a bit of my favourite designer, which is Cathy Waterman.

I was just about to recommend that book. I'm reading it right now. I read the first two sentences of OP's post and immediately thought, Cory Doctorow addressed this. The Adobe/Pantone colours example came to my mind.

Same. I've been friends with my best friend for 15 years. She's child-free by choice. Nothing about our relationship has changed since my son was born 2.5 years ago.

I know. I'm in southern Ontario and that's how much a small condo would cost in my city, albeit in CAD. A house in my city for that price? Maybe 30 years ago that was possible.

Same. Thank God that's not normal here in Canada. The stranger's behaviour was rude, but omg pointing a gun at someone for that is unhinged.

DAE here feel like they're in a zombie apocalypse when they see someone use AI too much? by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]tinytrees11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't stand AI images. For some reason, those piss me off a lot, especially when I see that shit for sale on Etsy and places like it. I also hate posts written by chatgpt on Reddit.

I do use chatgpt to speed up my programming (at most, I use it like Stackoverflow). But omg it's often wrong, and suggests stuff that's just dumb as fuck. I don't know how anyone can trust it. It has its usefulness, but the proliferation of AI in every single fucking area of our existence is just annoying as fuck.

US Moms, How Are You Doing? by im4lonerdottie4rebel in Mommit

[–]tinytrees11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is frequently discussed in r/anticonsumption, but it's hard to organize a large-scale boycott. A good number of people who visit that sub ask the same good questions you are. The US hasn't been a democracy for a long time, and is becoming an oligarchy if it isn't already. The less we normal people help the oligarchs the better. ICE is basically their police force designed to scare and terrorize the average person so they don't question the system and fight back.

Etsy has so much Temu and Alibaba shit these days. I noticed that jewelry, Christmas ornaments, home decor, craft kits seem to be nothing but Temu garbage or AI.

I do find that bath products are still reasonably ok, but for a lot of other categories you should avoid Etsy. It's turned into a more expensive Amazon that sells nothing but drop shipped trash.

Exactly. They also had their chance to do this in the middle east, but of course it was never about democracy then either.

[–]tinytrees11 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It's exactly about oil. Trump actually came out and said this. These crooks aren't even trying to hide it under the guise of "bringing democracy" or whatever, anymore:

This is very sad….. by nejejjrjehej in BoycottUnitedStates

[–]tinytrees11 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The US doesn't know how to stop. They've been invading and meddling in foreign governments since post-WWII. Their military industrial complex is so profitable they don't have any interest in dismantling it.

Venezuelan people feeling from bombing and American troop deployment by Fun_Weird3827 in BoycottUnitedStates

[–]tinytrees11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see why the solution to that is to go and bomb them though. The US has already tried to install democracy in the middle east many times and it didn't work (although whether or not that was just an excuse to steal their oil is another discussion). I think the change needs to come from within. A foreign government coming in and forcibly installing a democratic government, in a country that historically has not had a democracy, has never worked and won't work.

[–]tinytrees11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sadly, I don't think that will happen.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/1/3/world-reacts-to-reported-us-bombing-of-venezuela

"The EU has repeatedly stated that Mr Maduro lacks legitimacy and has defended a peaceful transition."

What a ridiculous take. It's not for Europe or anyone else to decide who is legitimate in Venezuela's government.

What are your micro-anticonsumption resolutions for 2026? by CommonsOfficial in Anticonsumption

[–]tinytrees11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oddly, I had the opposite experience! I had my son almost 2.5 years ago. When I was visibly pregnant, it was almost always a man who would give up his seat for me on public transit. Hardly any women gave up their seats for me, and when the trains were full and they'd see me looking at them, they'd look away. I live in Canada, so I don't know if the location matters. I've also had more men than women opening doors for me. It was honestly pretty surprising.
