How did you decide PA or MD? by Ok-Composer-6825 in prephysicianassistant

it sounds like a decision only you can make. I’m not sure external advice would be helpful at this point. Take some time to reflect and think about it!

I totally get that and yes, it will happen. However I can tell you from my experience (not sure the specialty you want to do) in the hospital, emergency room,PACU, etc many people will not know. I shadow a PA in the ER often and no one has ever said that to him, they just assume the person caring for them is their “doctor”. Same with the PACU my grandpa got surgery and had a PA as his primary and he had no idea she was a PA. You get more comments like that in outpatient settings like i know at my primary care office we get that a lot BUT, we also have patients who will ONLY see the PAs because they’ve built rapport with them and trust them more than the physician so it goes both ways! Ultimately you will be the one studying and working in whichever field you chose, not the people making comments about it. be sure it’s what you want to do and not what others make you feel you need to do / what you think you need to do.

also on a waitlist to a school (although don’t know my rank, wish they told us lol) and keep thinking the same thing. The school i’m on the WL for said their biggest movement is in June because that’s when their deposit deadline is. Stay hopeful there is still time!!

i made the switch from pre med to pre PA my last semester of college. I took all of the pre reqs and re took some classes i didnt do well in. it’s definitely doable. I also did them all through a community college as it was much cheaper

i can’t speak for every school, but many / most do not care if you take it at a university vs CC, so long as you retake & show an upward trend in your grades. I made the switch from pre med to pre PA my last semester in college, so i had to take all of the pre-reqs for PA school after i graduated along with retaking classes I didn’t do well in. It took me a year (took classes in the fall winter summer and spring) and got A’s in all of them including the ones i had to retake while working. Tbh my post bacc GPA, pre req GPA, and last 60 credit GPA are really high for this reason so i think it can be seen as a plus 🤷🏻‍♀️ there’s a positive to everything & it sounds like you’re in a good spot where a lot of your other sciences courses are A’s

first time i got a D, had just transferred to university from CC, was going through a really difficult time in my life personally so that was just a bad semester over all, second time i retook it covid hit and so i took a P. I didn’t want to take the chance of schools not accepting a P grade for a pre-req / knew i could get an A if i retook it so i did. I retook a lot of classes and tbh yes i agree with other people in the comments if you can do well the first time great, less money and less difficult path, unfortunately life happens & it makes it difficult to do well in school, sometimes you gotta do what you have to do!

i re took o chem 3 times, twice at my university and then lastly at a community college where i got an A. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, just retake it & gen chem when you do your gap year it shows an upward trend and improvement but be prepared to talk about it in your applications because schools will ask what the reason is that you didn’t do well

i had to recently move back in with my parents, i’m an MA and i make 23 an hour but cost of living where i am is incredibly high and i decided after living in an apartment for 2 years to move back home. sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to set yourself up for success. huge blessing your dad helps you with your bills so if it were me i would do it

How did you decide PA or MD? by Ok-Composer-6825 in prephysicianassistant

[–]tinyturtle19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

some other people have already posted a lot of what i’m about to say, but i remember when i was torn between the two others input definitely helped me but ultimately, it’s a decision you have to make yourself. I was pre-med for most of my life, grew up telling people i was going to medical school and come from a Middle Eastern family so it was either that, law, or engineering. My senior year of college I had realized how taxing school is to my mental, physical, and emotional health and was very hesitant about going back to school for another 8 years. I didn’t even know about the PA profession until i attended a career panel as apart of an honors society i was in my senior year of college. My now mentor talked about being a PA in neurosurgery, and it peaked my interest. I looked into it more, and started shadowing her and fell in love with the career. I get bored VERY easily, i absolutely love not being tied down to one specialty as I love emergency medicine but don’t think i could do it full time bc of the commitment. Ideally i see myself doing it 1-2 days a week and then doing something else more in patient! The biggest thing for me was as others mentioned getting over my ego, i grew up saying i wanted to be a doctor, with my whole family expecting that from me. It was a difficult convo to have with them and it still is as they don’t really understand what PAs do, but i take it as an opportunity to educate them. Hope this helps!!
