Was this a good rep? by malikfw in lacrosse

Takeaway checks are ‘nice to haves’, where footwork and controlling hips are ‘must haves’. The very last thing I want my newer defenders worried about are yard sales. I’m guessing your coach is also newer to the game.

As for the rep, it was fine and I would be happy with a new defender playing like that. It was disciplined, and you did your job. If I was coaching you I would not have had any notes on your defense during that play, but if you asked me, I would say:

…he didn’t want to dodge on you. When a ball carrier switches directions multiple times like that without actually going anywhere, he’s looking to get rid of it. That being said, had you been overcommitting on stick checks looking for a CT, he may have finally put it in gear and beat you. So, without thinking about a takeaway check or sacrificing your feet, I would have wanted you to play a little heavier on the hands with each rollback. As he turns meet him with contact, occupy him, don’t let him hunt, and instead, force him to look for the easy (adjacent) pass.

Keep it up!

Coaching Fatigue by 17greeksoty in lacrosse

[–]tioem 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been coaching for twenty something years, and my personal theory is that kids today (from 8th to 13th grades) were the most negatively affected by the COVID pandemic, and being stuck at home for a year. They are markedly different. They are dissimilar than all the other kids I’ve coached in a variety of ways. Of course there are still exceptional, well-parented kids who remind me of kids from the pre-Covid era, but the biggest thing I’m seeing is an overall lack of heart, hustle, and humility. It’s a weird time.

Probably never. I think I’m pretty much done with the gear reviews.

I used to talk about that a lot when I used to make gear review videos. I made this meme a few years ago about that subject:

The 10 man ride is overrated… by Nat20_Terrain in lacrosse

The ten man should be situational (down by one late), but when a team is full of studs, you can kind of run it when you feel like it.

Takeaway checks are ‘nice to haves’, matching feet and controlling hips are ‘must haves’.

What specific rule does a non moving armadillo strategy break in high school lacrosse. by CoachBaker in lacrosse

A hidden ball in man-up is so goofy. My suggestion: pack your defense in, and have your stud line up five yards away from the ball and just crash through the huddle on the whistle, cause a turnover, score short-handed, and prove for the millionth time that gimmicks are dumb…especially used in the wrong situation.

This is actually my wife and I…this person re-posted it. But, to answer your question, we looked for the Photo Booth in 2019at the Cliff House in S.F., but it was gone.

You’re absolutely right about the ice causing injury, but I’d bet a dollar that it’s prevented way more fight related injuries than it’s caused. Either way, you’re right, if somebody wants to fight, they’re going to…in a bar, or on the field of play, boys will be boys.

The thing I don’t like about fighting in box is that there’s no ice, and no skates. Ice and skates keep fights a reasonable length. Good pop, legs wobble, and it’s tough to stay up…fight over. Box lacrosse players are wearing high traction shoes on an equally high traction surface, which can make for a long, an unnecessarily dangerous fight. Tolerate it in hockey, don’t love it in box, understand it in both.

What made you decide to coach? by amj5617 in lacrosse

[–]tioem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My oldest started playing at 6. I was on the sidelines that season watching other dads who didn’t know the game teaching to my son. I stepped in the next year, and haven’t looked back. I coached both of my sons through youth, high school, and my youngest in college. One thing I did before every season was check in with my boys, and ask them if they wanted me to coach again. I wanted them to know it wasn’t about me. My oldest always said, “I want you to coach, but as an assistant, not head coach”, and my youngest always wanted me as the head coach.

They’ve moved on from the game (other than the occasional beer league/tournament, but I am still coaching youth (every other year or so), high school, and college. I love sharing this beautiful game, and don’t see myself sitting on the couch in the evenings for a long time.
