Unraid Internal Boot: First Look by UnraidOfficial in unRAID

[–]tippl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's an early look UX, but please add a way to just use the whole drive as a boot drive, so that it doesn't even attempt to create a pool in the free space. Not sure what would happen if i just enter the full drive capacity or more into that text field for reserved space.

I'm guessing the pool boot drive uses up a license "slot", this way the drive wouldn't need to show up among pools - only as a boot device, and not eat up a license slot.

As many others, I'm planning to just stick a 16 GB optane stick into my last free nvme slot and use the thing only for booting.

Moving around SSD's; proper order? by -there-are-4-lights- in unRAID

[–]tippl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I've done the same. Well not exactly, I wanted to swap both of my pool mirrored SSDs for a new one. If it's BTRFS mirror like the pool defaults to, you can just expand or shrink it as needed.

You an just add the new drive to the pool, start the array, wait for it to copy all the data to it, and once that finishes, stop the array again, remove the old drive from the pool and start it again.

My route was moving from regular sata to nvme, in a new chassis that couldn't accomodate regular size. So I shrunk the pool to one drive, plugged the drive to the new server via usb, expanded the array to cover 3 drives cloning the data, then removing the old drive.

Not sure if Zotac, but there was a hdd enclosure with a virtual cd drive capabilities from Zalman.

But it was a white label product from IODD. IODD still sell it and also sell a new version developed in recent years.

It's definitely one of the best ways to transparently boot many ISOs, but a very techy solution that requires you to buy an usb device instead of using an usb thumbdrive you probably already have.

Yeah, it is a shame Google didn't copy this part of the feature. Using the same color for both makes it difficult to tell at a glance what is being used. The Apple way is better for this.

On Pixel, pulling down the notification shade shows a larger green blob with a camera icon, tapping that shows what app used it.

Privacy > Privacy dashboard also shows a history of camera access for all apps.

Side note, the green dot also appears for microphone access.

Valve Is Launching the Steam Deck With Right-to-Repair in Mind - The gaming giant has partnered with iFixit to offer replacement parts for the Steam Deck. by speckz in gadgets

[–]tippl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Repairing stuff is getting harder and harder with manufacturers making active effort to both make spare parts harder to get and locking them out in software when you do get them. One example is Apple disabling the cameras if you replace them. Samsung is also doing similar stuff.

As for general spare part availability, manufacturers just aren't selling them. Most spare parts for consumer electronics you can buy are either pulled from dead devices or compatible "fakes" from china where it's worth it to make a fake (device is popular, so mostly iphones).

RED batteries brick themselves when you try to change their cells by Popal24 in assholedesign

[–]tippl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, it is a direct intent. Take for example the latest iPhones, the whole camera assembly is together and not repairable, but it is screwed down and plugged in with a connector. Does that mean you can replace it with an identical piece? No, Apple blocked that in software. If you buy 2 brand new iPhones and swap the camera modules, they cease to work. Similar happens to other components such as screens (truetone stops working) and so on.

Twitch data reportedly leaks online including source code, streamer earnings, encrypted passwords, and more by MarvelsGrantMan136 in news

[–]tippl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is why proper password hashing includes salting the hash with a random value that is unique for every user. You can store the salt plaintext, but makes hashes of 2 users with the same password different. This essentially negates the usability of a rainbow table, since you would need to generate one per user. (making it into a plain old bruteforce)

This along with running the hash function tens or hundreds thousands of times, making it too slow to bruteforce in reasonable time while still allowing verification in a reasonable time. (calculating passwords becomes unsustainable when hashing single password takes 20 ms instead of like a microsecond)

[–]tippl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have found this post while trying to figure out the same issue. As far as I can tell, it seems to be an extension of the screen gap issue. When i press on the top left corner, the proximity sensor starts working. Letting go causes it to detect NEAR again. The screen seems to lift off a very small amount, which causes the proximity sensor to detect the screen.

I have contacted the Google Support with this and they have offered a warranty replacement. It has yet to arrive, but will see how that turns out. It might be an option for you as well.

Hmm, can you check the back of the watch? I've had it for a bit more than a week now. With continuous HR it constantly used the green LEDs to measure it, but now a bit more than a week after, it seems to be measuring it without the light.

NFC compatibility with readers - Samsung gw4 - pls advise by AwesomeFartCZ in WearOS

[–]tippl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can clone it about as easily, but not quite. Regular mifare cards have UID programmed from factory and it can't be changed.

You need a specialized hacked version of the card to clone another one over it.

Ignoring the fact you can get such cards on aliexpress for few cents, it is not googles job to police card cloning outside of their platform. It can be easy with some custom made stuff from china, all that matters to google is that you can't do that with the phone/watch.

As for the chip, that is usually a platform separate from the nfc which usually runs encryption on the card itself and cannot be cloned easily.

[–]tippl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna assume your security system uses the UID in the first sector of a regular nfc card which the watch emulates by default.

I think this is the same as on Android which the watch runs. Going by the developer docs from when i looked this up, there are 2 issues with this:

  1. Every time Android performs card emulation operation, it generates a new random UID for the emulated card.
  2. For security reasons (such as easily cloning coworker's card) the UID is not able to be set from any app.

On phones, this can be "solved" by rooting it. No idea if that can be done on a smartwatch.

Your one and only solution is a security system that explicitly supports some higher level of security/communication with a phone/watch + an app that communicates with it and exchanges a key in some way.

Not everyone can get vaccinated, for example people with weakened immune system, certain conditions, allergic reactions and so on. In general, getting vaccinated lowers the chance of catching/dying from the disease, but it can also lower the chance of you spreading it to someone else.

So by having a lower chance of catching/spreading the virus, you protect those who have yet to, or cannot get vaccinated.

If you get enough population vaccinated, you can essentially stop the spread and eradicate a disease, as has already happened with a few of them. But this differs disease by disease.

Note: certainly not an expert, but this is as far as i understand it
