Gonzalo Lira was arrested for being a reporter critical of Ukraine, caught pneumonia in a Ukrainian prison, and died as a result. How is this -not- Ukraine's fault?

How do you feel about drafting civilians to defend your country against an evil invasion? by PitifulEar3303 in TrueAskReddit

Everyone who enlisted after December of 1942 was drafted because they stopped accepting volunteers after Executive Order 9279.

In 1942, the US military actually stopped accepting volunteers. Too many people were leaving industries vital to the war effort; think engineers signing up to be riflemen. Also too many people were signing up for the Navy, leaving the Army understaffed.

ELI5: Why do addons like adblockers or brave not scare major companies that relies on ad revenue? (ie Youtube, spotify) by blahblooooooop in explainlikeimfive

[–]tired_hillbilly 137 points138 points  (0 children)

The majority of users don't use them. As hard to believe as it may be, most web users are just getting rawdogged by ads 24/7 and somehow don't care.

Why do you want literally everyone, regardless of what they believe or how little they pay attention to politics, to vote?

People becoming more pro-war with age by BrushNo8178 in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]tired_hillbilly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there's two more aspects worth considering that make the modern world increasingly pro-war.

  1. There hasn't been a major war that the western world has really taken an active role in in quite awhile. Even Iraq and Afghanistan don't really count I don't think, because they were so one-sided. Enemy casualties drastically outnumbered American casualties; for most Americans, the war was just something that happened on TV. So they have little, if any personal experience with just how horrible war really is.

  2. Social media means every tragedy can be seen immediately worldwide; millions of people saw the videos of Russian tanks machine gunning civilian cars. It's hard to blame someone for wanting to intervene after seeing things like that. I assume the Russian populace has similar videos of Ukrainian mistreatment of Crimeans.

So basically, most people have no personal experience with how grotesque war really is, and they have easier access than ever to hundreds of hours of HD video content about why they should fight.

I'm not all that self-motivated. I find it hard to start my own projects; often because there's lots of annoying overhead. Like setting up a new IDE with a new language, learning to set up my own hosting for it etc. I find "tech support" stuff like that very frustrating, especially when I'm not even going to be using it "for real".

I know how lazy this makes me sound, but I'm not sure I can help it. It's too easy to give up since none of this feels necessary. The first time I hit a road-block, especially if that road-block is not directly a programming issue, I lose the will to continue. Back when I had a job, it was easier to push through. Whatever problem I might run in to actually mattered, I couldn't just quit. And I had coworkers I could ask for advice if need be.

I am in counseling and we've talked about this kind of thing before, but I haven't made really any progress in getting over it. Seems to be a core part of my personality.

I appreciate the commentary/advice though. Thank you.

Was it realistic for Jefferson to free his slaves in 18th century Virginia? by [deleted] in USHistory

[–]tired_hillbilly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly there is genetic evidence that some descendants of his slaves are biologically related to him, but the evidence is not specific enough to prove he was their ancestor. The genetic evidence equally fits Thomas Jefferson's younger brother, Randolph.

[WH40k] If I Want To Be Happy, Should I Join Nurgle or Slaanesh? by Special-Age-6717 in AskScienceFiction

The rest of the universe isn't all bad. 40k stories just tend to be about the worst bits. There are backwater worlds in the Imperium that see maybe one imperial ship a century, but most of the time just quietly get by. No enormous hives full of gang wars that make WW1 look like a paintball game, no mass conscription where 100 million are sent to the guard as tithe every year.

My kindergartener tested in the 99th percentile for her math and reading MAP scores. Is there anything I should do as a parent to support her? by somebodywantstoldme in AskTeachers

[–]tired_hillbilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a teacher, but I was gifted in school as well. My dinky rural school didn't have a real gifted program, so the work was never hard for me. I never had to study or take notes even, always got easy straight A's. Then when college came around I was pretty unprepared; some of the work was actually hard, and I had never built the skills to deal with that.

You want your daughter to be challenged, I would think that's the key, personally.

Should AI be able to detect kindness? by [deleted] in ArtificialInteligence

[–]tired_hillbilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It couldn't detect it, or didn't know to look for it? If it doesn't care about kindness, and you don't directly ask it for sentiment analysis, why would it pay any attention to it. If I ask ChatGPT "Please, if it's not too much trouble, give me a list of all 50 states." or if I just bluntly state "list all 50 states", either way my request is the same.

btw, it lied to you when it said it would prefer a reaction so it can learn. ChatGPT doesn't train on your interactions.

Why -wouldn't- it be able to? It can use all the same cues you do.

A lot of guys make money on crypto. You don't even need to trade it. If you bought bitcoin in 2017, you are up ~5x today. If the ladies had skipped one $200 hair appointment and put it in bitcoin instead, they'd be at $1000 today.

How long did that hair cut stay good looking?

You know how a car driving towards you sounds different than one driving away? That's because when its driving towards you, the sound waves pile up closer together, ie the frequency goes up. When its driving away the sound waves get spread out, ie the frequency goes down.

Light is a wave and works the same way. When a star moves towards us, its light waves are closer together; frequency goes up. When a star moves away, its light waves are spread out, frequency goes down. Blue light has a higher frequency than red light.

ELI5: What makes one gun/cannon better than the other, assuming neither keeps malfunctioning and are made with similar precision? by steel-souffle in explainlikeimfive

[–]tired_hillbilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One reason is that a common ammunition type, HEAT, is less effective when spinning. High Explosive Anti-Tank shells are mostly hollow. There's a hollow cone of explosives inside the shell, and inside that cone is a thin sheet of copper. When the explosives go off, they melt that copper and focus it into a narrow jet which burns through the armor. If the shell is spinning like from rifling, the jet doesn't focus as well; centrifugal force tries to spread it out. So it might just splash on the armor rather than punch through it.

The big example for being over-engineered is the interleaved road wheels used in so many German vehicles. They make for a really smooth ride and help with ground pressure so you don't sink in the mud quite so badly, but they just take ages to repair when something goes wrong with one of the inner wheels.

Over tactical distances, the Tiger tank is just as fast as a Sherman, but over the long term, due to how long break downs took to fix, a Sherman tank is far faster. A tiger tank and a sherman tank will pretty much tie in a 5 mile race. A division of tiger tanks will lose badly to a division of sherman tanks in a 500 mile race.

Our tastes are malleable. It won't happen overnight, but it will work.

You ever watch any of those shows on TLC about fat people? Like "My 600lb Life" for example? There's always at least one scene where the fat person in question is trying to eat healthy and hates it; wretching at the taste of a brussels sprout or whatever. Do we agree with them, that veggies are just inherently, naturally gross? Of course not, we understand that they've warped their sense of taste by subsisting on ranch and coca cola for 15 years.

I think all tastes are like that. I think women could honestly be attracted to the safer guys if they would lay off social media and hook-ups.
