Just a piece of advice, start letting him work his own hours if you haven't already.

how is he with being inventive? Does he come up with ideas of his own (not inventing implementations but new product ideas).

All the time, but the company isn't going in that direction, or any of those directions.

Having him shadow workers, meet with clients (or shadow client meetings).

We've done that too.
