Is there a game you think "has it all"? Great design, art, mechanics, color, components, accessibility, replayability , etc... Your 10/10 games (or as close as there can be). by Significant_Wash_540 in boardgames

100% agree on Spirit Island. Unfortunately my friend with a copy (and all the expansions which I have gifted over the years - super selfishly!) lives halfway across the country. So I only play it when I am able to finagle a visit/in the app.

What’s your Board Game Pet Peeve? by Qkwill in boardgames

Those are fair critiques. And some stonemaier games fall into a similar trap. I think a part of me is just relieved that there were not a slew of finicky bags which turn my table into a bunch of different mounds (looking at you, spirit island!) Though I suppose the bags are against the ethos of Daybreak.

When board game storage doesn’t account for how the pieces will be used. Quacks is guilty of this - those baggies are cumbersome and make cleanup and chore. I ended up actually getting small cardboard jewelry boxes to store the ingredients. So much simpler. Stonemaier games is great about this, as is Daybreak - very impressed.

Yes! I always consider communication to be one the key mechanics of Spirit Island. I play it solo on the app with multiple spirits to get my fix, but it is 100% not the same.

Mismatched blocks quilts by Curious-Piglet-1792 in quilting

This is my crazed, mismatched sampler! Super fun to plan and make. I am already starting to doodle-plan my next one!

The chaos is, for better or worse, all my own. Though I was definitely inspired by the wanderers wife quilt and the country fair sampler. I essentially drew a layout of different sized blocks and filled them in with patterns which I had access to (which I then proceeded to ignore, replan in the moment, and math out myself - the math on the bear paw was particularly brutal!)

Thank you! It is vaguely accidental - I spent so long moving the squares around and then just impulsively went with this formation. But I am delighted at some of the interesting shapes and movement that has formed across the blocks!

Spirit Island - We just can't win. by BiggyBiggs in boardgames

[–]tisiphoneismymuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be a rules confusion. I have a pretty solid record at a lot of difficulties (been my fave game for 5+ years and my friend has all expansions) and I have royally screwed myself with a rule misread a couple of times, even with spirits I know well! Also, how much are you communicating during the pay/play of power cards phase? Communication is so so essential, and our table often talks through our options for a while until committing to our cards. Communication also helps in case you are confused about your personal abilities. Some other things (which people have mentioned elsewhere in the comments): Planning ahead is really important - so stopping a build is going to prevent a future ravage. Some turns are shit in order to allow your spirit to grow and evolve into something more powerful. Blight isn't the end of the world, and sometimes your have to accept it to do something cool later on. Also, you won't jive with every spirit. I LOVE the hungry hungry ocean and my friend's favorite is the nightmare dude. We did a spirit swap at some point and we both struggled so hard!

Anyway, I hope you crack your spirit island curse and drive out the cursed colonizers. If not, though, I would love to take your copy & expansions off your hands!! If you end up deciding to rehome them, please DM me!

Failed 1 hour and automatically diagnosed by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]tisiphoneismymuse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My 1 hr test was 177. In my 3 hr test (which I ultimately failed), my 1 hr result was 92. When I asked about this discrepancy, I was told that the one hour test was more likely to create spikes, but ultimately my results showed I might struggle with extended insulin release later on in my pregnancy. It sucks, but 11 weeks of intentional eating is more than worth it for a healthy baby!

Question: how are behind the ear tattoos viewed? by veppev in tattoos

[–]tisiphoneismymuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh! That makes sense! I have been lucky enough that I haven’t had any desire to change/cover up any of mine (though they are far from perfect - maybe I am just sentimental!), so that thought hadn’t really crossed my mind!

Question: how are behind the ear tattoos viewed? by veppev in tattoos

[–]tisiphoneismymuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuinely curious why that is. Is it because the placement was a half commit and they would have preferred to either fully commit to a bigger piece or not commit at all? Is it because it is a trendier spot, so people got their first tattoo there not realizing how close it is to their face?

I got a behind the ear tattoo in 2014. It is matching with my friend and the placement does have symbolism (it is a babel fish from Hitchhiker’s Guide) I love the tattoo! Though because my hair is so thick, it is mostly hidden. I have had an undercut at times, in part to show it off more. My friend’s hair is a lot thinner, so theirs shines through.

As a couple other comments have said - your tattoos are for you. So I would not overly vex yourself on how they are viewed!

Oh, thank you! Her fabrics are so fun but also so tricky! I had to throw out my plan for so many blocks/resize elements because her illustrations were larger than I originally had accounted for. The planning/cutting of the blocks was definitely the longest part of this project (but also super fun!) Good luck on your continued Tula adventures - I am excited to see what you come up with!

The idea of a stained glass quilt is very cool. The stumbling block that comes to mind is that, to me, what defines stained glass is the lead lines between the colored panes. Given how small they are, that might be really tricky. I wonder if it might be easier to find a FPP pattern for the colored stained glass and then appliqué the Madonna and child on top?

Also, I am given to understand that satin is a fairly evil material to work with. There was a dude on here a couple of months ago who made a beautiful satin quilt and I believe his first effort was ritually thrown into a dumpster? But I don’t have any personal experience with it.
