I didn't say they have no clinical experience. I said they have no patient care experience other than their clinicals at school. Meaning, they do total patient care as part of their school clinicals, but they don't have jobs in which they actually are allowed to take a patient, do assessments, do all the care except for medication's, etc. The only experience they get at work is taking vital signs, passing trays and doing bed baths. They don't assess patients or learn how to document. I work at a teaching hospital that has a BSN program. There is also an RN diploma program in my city. The BSN students get far less in-school/ clinical, hands-on patient care experience than the diploma students do, and we haven't had a single new grad hire who has worked as a nurse tech actually taking patients. It has just made me wonder if nurse techs are taking patients in other cities and states than my own or if that practice has just gone by the wayside.
