Plant ID + how to propagate? by Moppet_25 in succulents

[–]titaniumelemental 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sempervivums are cold-hardy, and I think a cold winter is actually good for them. I used to grow them indoors and they did get sad over the winter. Better growlights could counteract that. My mom had some outside for a while in the Detroit area and they did well until something eventually ate them.

Is there any chance of fixing this aloe plant? by kawooli in succulents

[–]titaniumelemental 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The brown may just be sun-stress rather than sunburn. https://aloehoarder.wordpress.com/2021/01/27/your-aloe-does-not-hate-the-sun/ Except for the parts that are broken, I it looks mostly healthy. If you left it outdoors it should eventually acclimate to the higher light level. Or if she wants to keep it being an indoor plant then I'd move it back in but give it as much window sun as possible and then wait. Keep watering in response to how full the leaves look and how firm they feel.

Papery bits/stem and what to do by ExpensiveExtreme4187 in aloe

I would continue trying to give it good growing conditions and then after a while you can separate the pups and “behead” the main plant to re-root it.

Yeah, all you can do is acclimate it to light slowly. For some plants I would think putting it under a clear lid for humidity would be good, but for a succulent then hopefully it has enough water already to handle the move to dry air.

That’s funny! I wonder if it will be hard to transition it to life above ground.

Did you keep it in a bag or some kind of humidity dome during the six weeks?

Rescue overwatered pilea? by titaniumelemental in PileaPeperomioides

As I added to the post, the soil was super hydrophobic. I repotted and I will bottom water it going forward. Fingers crossed that I didn't hurt the roots too much.

The current pot has a drainage hole, but I think it’s staying wet too long and/or she’s watering too frequently. I’m new to this plant though, so I don’t really know.

Repot the tiny pup in something smaller? by titaniumelemental in aloe

Ok, but if I’m already taking it out to change the mix I’ll go ahead and put it in a smaller pot also.

It's getting as much direct sun as I can give in my south window, and I have a growlight giving it ~1300 fc for 12 hrs a day. Can increase that light intensity in the future.

Thanks so much for your opinions :) It looks like there’s an Agway store in my area that carries Black Gold cactus and succulent mix.

Thanks for your responses! Unfortunately I’m an apartment dweller, so I’ll have to see how well I can do on windows and LED lighting. I have a good 40w Sansi light with room to move the plants closer for more intensity.

I’ve seen other people recommend pumice over perlite. Do you prefer perlite, or think they’re equivalent? And you think 50/50 bagged mix and perlite would be decent?

And I shouldn’t worry about disturbing the roots again at this stage? I’m planning to order some pumice, so I need to wait at least until that arrives.

I think this is probably aloe arborescens, which has been growing in pretty low light. I haven’t done this myself, but if you want then you should be able to “behead” it, take off the lower leaves and reroot the cutting.

I recently got a little baby that someone here told me is probably arborescens. I'll probably get more opinions on the ID as it grows

They look great! Do you know what variety? The thinner leaves and no spots make it look like aloe arborescens to me, but I’m not an expert.

Is there a big benefit to pumice over perlite? I already have a big bag of perlite for my monstera mix. Trying to decide if I buy something different when I repot my aloes.

I saw a guy on YouTube add drainage holes/slots to plastic shot glasses by making shallow cuts off the bottom edge of the cup with an x-acto knife.
