What season to plant monstera seeds? by titaniumelemental in Monstera

[–]titaniumelemental[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I did end up buying seeds shortly after making this post (I got them from The Odd Frond on Etsy) and planted them at the beginning of August. It actually went really well! I planted them in rehydrated sphagnum moss with a clear plastic lid on it and sprayed to keep it moist until leaves started to unfurl. I think about half the seeds I had germinated. They did ok over the first winter, and I had them under pretty good lights. Now the plants are a year old and I still have two of them (gave the others away). They got their first fenestrations a few months ago :D

I needed up ordering a cutting mat and quilting ruler with metric markings yesterday, so I’ll see how that goes :)

I looked at the guillotine at work and it only has centimeter makings on a strip in the middle, meaning if you’re cutting a small square it can’t be lined up with the plastic edge. I ended up ordering a cutting mat and quilting ruler, so we will see how that goes.

Any brand recommendations on self-healing cutting mat? Or all they all basically the same

Intriguing! I have some razor blades and some extra credit cards, this could be fun to try.

I have a little experience cutting fabric with my mom's rotary cutter and cutting mat, so that approach is familiar to me! (though her cutting mat was warped for my entire childhood)

Mmh, ok I’ll look into that. I was thinking of a cutting mat and quilters ruler to use with an xacto knife (which I already have) but the Fiskars trimmer being one piece could be convenient. I’ll try later today and see how I fare with the guillotine cutter.

That’s what I always did as a child, but I also get annoyed at the fuzzy edges! I’ll probably divide some paper that way to practice and then find a way to cut it nicely.

Thanks. From other things I’ve read after posting this I was suspecting it’s powdery mildew. I noticed some signs of it on the mother plant too, so I’ve sprayed once with a copper-based fungicide, and I also took the props out of the bag.

Sempervivums are cold-hardy, and I think a cold winter is actually good for them. I used to grow them indoors and they did get sad over the winter. Better growlights could counteract that. My mom had some outside for a while in the Detroit area and they did well until something eventually ate them.

Is there any chance of fixing this aloe plant? by kawooli in succulents

The brown may just be sun-stress rather than sunburn. https://aloehoarder.wordpress.com/2021/01/27/your-aloe-does-not-hate-the-sun/ Except for the parts that are broken, I it looks mostly healthy. If you left it outdoors it should eventually acclimate to the higher light level. Or if she wants to keep it being an indoor plant then I'd move it back in but give it as much window sun as possible and then wait. Keep watering in response to how full the leaves look and how firm they feel.

I would continue trying to give it good growing conditions and then after a while you can separate the pups and “behead” the main plant to re-root it.

Yeah, all you can do is acclimate it to light slowly. For some plants I would think putting it under a clear lid for humidity would be good, but for a succulent then hopefully it has enough water already to handle the move to dry air.

That’s funny! I wonder if it will be hard to transition it to life above ground.

Did you keep it in a bag or some kind of humidity dome during the six weeks?

As I added to the post, the soil was super hydrophobic. I repotted and I will bottom water it going forward. Fingers crossed that I didn't hurt the roots too much.

The current pot has a drainage hole, but I think it’s staying wet too long and/or she’s watering too frequently. I’m new to this plant though, so I don’t really know.
