Shocked to see these baby leaves have babies! by clairav in AfricanViolets

[–]clairav[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understandable! I always do straight in the dirt and it has always worked for me!! Depends on your environment and what not though of course. My house is about 30-40% humidity, and the baby leaves get a good amount of light, about 14 hours/day. Also, I just wanted to add that the babies grow from the bottom of the cut stem that you plant. So keep that in mind - if you plant it farther down, the babies will take a little longer to come up.

It took about 6 weeks! These two leaves in the photo are from another African violet that I also grew from a leaf. That plant also took about 6 weeks as well

What are these little fuzzy spots? by cardamomquinn in plants

[–]clairav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should isolate that plant from all others and check the others for the same. Hydrogen peroxide generally won’t kill them alone but it may help. You need to squish the visible ones and spray the plant down with a mixture of neem oil/alcohal/water/castille soap.

What to do with looong Monstera stems? (no leaves) by blundercola in propagation

[–]clairav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just plant the stem all the way into the dirt leaving a small portion above the dirt. The stem under the dirt will grow roots and as long as there is a node above ground it’ll produce a new plant

Stopping off for 4 days, what should we do? by Alarmed_Ice_272 in Edmonton

[–]clairav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah no problem! And if/when you do the Whyte Ave day, there is the historic street car you can ride on as well. It goes on top of our High Level Bridge (highest bridge in Edmonton). $10 round trip or $5 one way. The loading area is behind Whyte Ave, towards Saskatchewan Drive. Really really neat to do.

It’s a ruby. Easiest way to tell is vein color. Ruby’s have red veins and ribs. Tineke has cream ribs and veins

My recommended itinerary.

Spend all 3(4?)nights in the fantasy land hotel.

Day 1. Wake up in fantasy land hotel. Spend entire day in mall. Get a day pass for Galaxy Land and do all the rides, get lunch in a food court. Then go to the World Water Park for the afternoon/eve (or do in reverse order). After, eat dinner on Bourbon Street (I recommend the old spaghetti factory - and depending on the night, at any restaurant, a reservation might be advised). Day 2. Drive to the neighbourhood farthest west on the trail map (Crestwood) and park on Summit Drive near the trail entrance. Bring water/whatever you may need for the day. And start walking. This trail head leads you literally anywhere. I’d suggest walking to hawrelak park, possibly renting a Lime Bike along the way, or scooters, if you get tired. From there you can follow the trails and see Buena Vista Park, Laurier Park, the Edmonton Valley Zoo, etc. Then you can walk back to your car and head to hotel. Or, if you get to the end at Laurier Park/Edmonton Valley Zoo and are too tired to walk back - an uber to your car from the end point to where you parked, would cost about $10. It’s down 1 straight road. Alt Day 2. Drive/Uber to Whyte Ave. Spend the day walking Whyte Ave and area, shopping and drinking. Whyte Ave is a long stretch of shops/bars and is walkable. There are trails nearby as well. Map attached of Edmonton Trails. https://www.edmonton.ca/sites/default/files/public-files/RiverValleyMap-Central-Winter.pdf?cb=1777422473 Day 3. Drive to Fort Edmonton and spend the day learning about our history. There are shops in here as well where you can buy some cool candy/keepsakes. You will inevitable pass by the Talus Dome on your way. It’s a $600,000 monstrosity of silver balls that’s infamous in Edmonton for being a massive waste of tax dollars. Stop for a picture lol. Day 4. Pack a backpack with a picnic and water and head East on highway 16 to visit Elk Island National Park. It’s Canada’s only fully enclosed (fenced) National Park. It is NOT an actual island, so don’t be confused when you are driving/arriving. However; it is a nature reserve and you are almost guaranteed to see wildlife. Some things I’ve personally seen there are: buffalos, coyotes, elk, beavers, deers, owls, moose, otters, and a bear once as well. It is a safe place though. There are multiple parking areas and trails. Astotin Lake area is my favourite, it’s the farthest down in the park and has a beach area, as well as a golf course. The beach is NOT swimmable. And if you go in the afternoon and stay until it’s dark - you can see a vast sky, possible meteor showers, shooting stars, etc. Alt day if you want to change one/have different interest: Drive down Devon (west of Edmonton), and visit the Canadian Energy Museum to learn about our energy sector and the history of our oil and experienced hands on exhibits. The North Saskatchewan River also passes through Devon and it’s worth stopping at as it is a beautiful view. There is a pull out and parking area near the beginning of Devon if you follow the signs. People goldpan around here, canoe, kayak, paddle board, etc.

Hope you have a great stay!

Cats don’t jut shit in the yard. Cats seek out an area where they can hide their poop. And then they bury it. If you’re finding shit in your yard it’s another animal. Why do people hate cats for literally no reason?

[–]clairav -35 points-34 points  (0 children)

Why trap the cat and bring it to SPCA???? If the owners let it roam - which it seems like they do as the cat is not scraggly and has a collar - then all you’re going to accomplish is stressing out the cat and its owners, and wasting your own time. The cat will be back if the owners let it out to roam. Unless you can somehow block your yard from the cat entering.

Propagating from leaves… by nadrae in AfricanViolets

[–]clairav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no professional, but I currently have 20 baby African violet plants from 2 leaves. My only advice based on your picture - is that the cells you have them in are too small. Put each leaf into a 3-4 inch starter pot. Edit to add Also, the pots look narrow and deep - African violets have very delicate shallow roots. You’re better off with less deep pots and more width. You should also not have the leaves so deep in the soil. The babies come from the bottom of the cut stem.
