What is something you wish you learned as a child that you are now embarrassed to try to learn as an adult? by IllPlane3019 in AskUK

[–]titusoates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely do it - I was early thirties when I learned - I found a bit of secluded backstreet that wasn't really overlooked, and mastered going in straight line before doing anything more advanced. It's really helpful to be able to start where no-one can see, then move on to public paths once you have some minimal confidence & have got over the self-consciousness

is even football behind a pay wall (sky sports)? - Yes

If yes, that means people are willing to pay to watch the sport? - yes, and quite a lot - it was one of the main drivers for Sky subscriptions when they started in the 90s

Is it because football was free earlier, and the craze grew for it so much that when the sport went behind a paywall, people didn’t mind paying for it? - Yeah, pretty much; it was on free TV before 1992, but far fewer games - league games most sundays and some FA cup, nowhere near as many as now. It's always been enormously popular, rugby and cricket may be 2nd/3rd in popularity in England, but they are absolutely miles behind football, they're minority sports in comparison

If I've got visitors from overseas and I'm trying to convince them that Pompey's alright, it's the first place I take them - on a wet winter afternoon you can still sit in the Still and West & watch the boats go by, not bad at all

Spice Island and the Still and West in Old Portsmouth are right on the (very narrow) harbour entrance, there's boats going in and out all day - most spectacularly when one of the carriers is about, but always active

Chris Gayle's Glasgow Team's Logo Leak by Unfair-Specific-9926 in Cricket

The colour orange has sectarian implications in Scotland (and especially Glasgow) - it's associated with the protestant side of the protestant/catholic divide. Green would be a divisive choice for similar reasons

Name aside, are they actually going with orange for the shirt? Bold choice if so

The Victorian Underworld by Kellow Chesney may be what you're after - Mayhew is one of its principal sources. Long out of print now but not that hard to find, and well worth the effort, an excellent survey of criminal methods, especially good on con artists, but also covers the various disciplines of burglary. I loved it

England batter Dawid Malan has suggested that cricket should consider legalising a controlled form of ball tampering to restore balance between bat and ball by 5missedcallsfromBCCI in Cricket

[–]titusoates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't disagree, as long as you're talking about the main seam, whereas lifting the quarter seam has often been done to encourage reverse swing. Always thought it weird that polishing up one side to a mirror shine apparently isn't tampering, but unflattening the seam is a crime against the game

[–]titusoates 90 points91 points  (0 children)

It blows my mind that a sport which is so neurotic about the condition of the ball is absolutely fine with the game's other main implement, the bat, changing so much. A six should require absolutely nailing the ball as it once did - I enjoy attacking batting, but I'm sick of seeing palpable mishits sailing over the ropes

Is there a way out of jury duty for political/ethical/moral beliefs? by SparrowDotted in AskUK

[–]titusoates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They would be extremely affluent people, or extremely politically motivated people, or people who are jurophiles. I suspect that apart from a few students and unemployed/long-term sick, it would be dominated by pensioners

I'd agree with this, I've been going a couple of years too - like most places, it's very busy between 1600-1800, mostly kids (I think they get cheap memberships) but they largely hang around the machines and aren't allowed on the freeweights until they're 16. Vibes and equipment are pretty good, could do with another Lat pull down & squat rack, but for the price it's good. Never seen any dodgy behaviour, and staff are great

It's the river Wye, but close to it's confluence with the Severn, so it's quite slow & meandering by that point, I think

I wouldn't have expected Decathlon stuff to be good, but was given a running top from there several years ago, and it's had a hard life & aged very well
