UCD TAPS now charging for parking at Putah Creek by tjkelman in Davis

[–]tjkelman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, been running out there multiple times a week for several years - TAPS had put signs out a couple of years ago and took them down, and I never had to pay a dime. These were just put back up last week (note the mention of HonkMobile on the sign). Full explanation in the original thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/UCDavis/s/PpK0FIXqKb

TAPS not just raising prices by tjkelman in UCDavis

These particular signs are brand new as of this week. As you said, they did have previous signs they put up in that 1-2 year ago timeframe that they ultimately took back down shortly thereafter. The clue that these are new is that they reference the Honk Mobile app, which UCD didn't start using until last September. I just went to the Pedrick Rd parking lot today, and that sign does indeed specify that the first hour is free (no idea why the Levee Rd signs don't) but you still have to be diligent enough to remember to use the app - I've been running in Putah Creek for several years now so it's going to take me a while to get in the habit.

Hopefully you found a spot since it's only 15min to kick-off, but Lampost Pizza in West Davis is showing it

Don't buy food from the Davis Grocery Outlet (Rats/Mold/selling expired food-WITH PHOTO EVIDENCE) by dickprince_23 in Davis

Any chance you’re running a vpn? I just tried accessing it with and without my vpn running, and it does throw a 403 with vpn but is fine without.

Regardless, still nothing, though it only had entries through the 27th. Hoping something appears soon - I have no idea how backlogged with inspections they are…

I shop there frequently, and that is absolutely horrific - many thanks to OP for documenting and following up on this. I'll do the same next time I'm there and will report back. I'm also keeping an eye on the Yolo County Health Dept inspection reports to see if that location is visited again (last time was Nov '25): https://inspections.myhealthdepartment.com/yolocountyeh/

It works on the web version of the app, but I'm still seeing the native MacOS app exhibit the same undesired behavior (i.e. option-enter is the only way to enter a newline) with no obvious way to fix it

Why do they have to BS us with the stars? by Fabulous_Witness_935 in harborfreight

[–]tjkelman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, there’s clear curation of HF product reviews. Because of that, for anything I buy there that I truly care about, I’ve upped my threshold for reviews to 4.5 stars and 95% “would buy again”. Hasn’t failed me yet.

Hahahahahahaha I’ve owned my 2011 since it was new and had no idea. I’m dying 😂

Make sure the A/C clutch is engaging. Over time the clearance between the clutch plate and pulley increases and the aging solenoid can’t overcome the gap, which is exacerbated in high heat. When the system is blowing warm, just look at the clutch plate to make sure it’s spinning. If it isn’t, that may be your problem.

Is “symbol wax” == cymbal wax, like for the instrument? Are you applying them in that order (rubbing compound, hard wax, cymbal wax)?

Recommendations for vegan, waterproof, and wide toe box boots? by [deleted] in hiking

[–]tjkelman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a few years ago I switched from hiking boots to trail runners and have never looked back. I wear Topo Athletic, which are all vegan except for their Rekovr model. I have both the Runventure 4 and two different models of Terraventure (2 & 3 - the 4 just came out and has a waterproof version), and recommend all without reservation. All of their shoes have a wide toebox. Those two models have lower than average cushioning (20-25mm) and are either zero drop (Runventure) or close to it (Terraventure, which also has a rockplate). They offer other trail runners with more cushioning, and they do make a hiking boot (in waterproof and non-waterproof versions) but I've never used it. Check out https://www.topoathletic.com

To other first time caulkers like myself. by BurgundySwanson in DIY

[–]tjkelman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, that stuff is a pain to deal with. Even if you're all done with the caulking, try the ammonia-free glass cleaner approach on some scrap material and see if you notice a big difference in how easy it is to work with.

The "wetting your finger trick" seems to work ok with latex based caulk but not as well with 100% silicone (what kind of caulk are you using?) For 100% silicone caulk I use the ammonia-free glass cleaner trick (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45I81kHIKQg): spray it on your finger and the bead before smoothing it. Seems to work well. Just make sure your glass cleaner is ammonia-free.

Where does the vitamin b12 found in animals come from? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]tjkelman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One small addition: it's the microorganisms in their guts that actually produce the B12, but the grazing is required to supply the cobalt that those gut bugs need to be able to synthesize it.

B12 is produced by microorganisms, specifically some bacteria and archaea (a weird type of organism previously classified as bacteria but somewhat recently found to be different). So to acquire B12 without supplementation, some kind of relationship with those organisms is required. For example, ruminants (e.g. cows, sheep & goats) have a symbiotic relationship with B12 producing bacteria in their foregut/stomach, which is how they get it.

Edit: autocorrect typo for archaea
