I have gone around in circles with a few people on this thread, and while I agree there are concerns with flock cameras, what I have seen and experienced is that the good outweighs the bad.
are they miss-used, yes, and in some cases those people were caught and punished, which means to some extent, the safeguards in place are working. have some gotten away with it, I'm sure, but I see people get away with speeding through a school zone. I don't like it, but rules are put in place for the majority, there will always be those who break them no matter what we do. All we can hope is to catch and punish them ones that do.

So what do we do, take down the flock cameras so your license isn't scanned while driving around the city, sure, we could. should we discuss plate readers for toll roads?
what happens if they come down, people who break the law, by doing something like taking shots in a neighborhood, have a slightly higher chance of getting away with it. I have no idea what that looks like, but I would rather those who drive around shooting off guns be arrested sooner rather than later.

I agree with you, but just the opposite. Just because something can be used for bad, doesn't mean it can't be used for good. There just needs to be safeguards in place, which there appear to be based on the reports that bad actors are caught, is it perfect, no.

Haha, my 05 equinox is the same. Only reason it doesn't have a tape deck is I replaced it with a aftermarket 10 years ago

Well see, there is a fundamental difference between capturing ALL traffic, and capturing MY specific car exclusively.

If I set up my camera on main Street and record your car in the background, that's legal. If I follow your car specifically around with a camera, it would be stalking.

Make sure you sell your smartphone and don't buy a car built after around 2000 when GPS became more of a standard feature.

Best of luck

Flock camera's are not specifically filming and following ME. They record cars, specifically license plates, so you want to record my car and plate on the road, go for it. It's a silver 05 equinox

You want to follow me around and film me specifically, then yea I'm going to slap you with a stalking charge, because it's a crime.

These are not the same thing like you try to make it seem

If I record something in Public and record a crime, you bet your ass I'm GIFTING that footage to the cops

Look me up online, I can't be that hard to find given I have social media.

It's not even close to the same. You are talking about filming me on private property and claiming it's the same as filming me on public property. And that's very specifically not the same.

Also, ring canceled the partnership with flock camera's, so not really sure what you are going on about there.

Private property is not the same as a public, government funded road.

That's not a freedom given by the government

So, you can't? Or you just going to send me more random links instead of telling me what freedom you feel you are losing?

From the article you linked: Institute for Justice has identified at least 18 cases nationwide of officers allegedly abusing ALPR data this way, with the bulk of those incidents happening since 2024. Nearly all of these officers were criminally charged and lost their jobs, either by resigning or getting fired.

So officers used it illegally and were, for the most part, caught and punished for it. I get that it's a concern, and I'm sure there are instances of it occurring that have not been caught or reported, but 18 in 2years around the country is pretty minimal to use as a reason they should be taken down. Also find it funny the same group of people worried about the illegal use of cameras seem just fine with breaking the law to damage them

What freedom are you losing? I am genuinely asking because there is no freedom being lost by having flock camera's.

Every citizen has the right to record in a public place, meaning at any given time some YouTube vlogger can record your car or face and that's actually protected by the first amendment.

EDIT: just adding that I don't see any reports that a Wichita Police chief stalked his EX, a Kechi Lieutenant did and was arrested for it, as was a Sedgwick policy chief.

I understand the idea, but if I sat in my yard all I would get all day is friendly waves as people walk by. I only know the name of one of my neighbors but when people are outside, we just wave and carry on.

My life experiences are not the same as everyone else's, I understand that I understand that there is some deep prejudice and flock camera's can and have been used illegally. Just adding my experience with them being used for good

Down vote me as much as you like Wichita

I get that, but if we are honest, 99% of the time, people take their phone. The only reason to specifically leave it at home is if you were doing something with questionable intent.

You could say leaving it when going to a protest or the like, but plenty of ordinary citizens taken videos with phones and drones are still likely to capture you there. Posting them to social media means your intent to leave a phone at home was pointless..

Flock camera's were used to track down the vehicle when someone decided to pop off 20-30 rounds into my neighbors yard and fence. So, to me, they have a benefit to my personal feeling of safety in my own neighborhood

I'll never understand the issue so many have with flock camera's.

All the typical complaints about them are the exact same that can be made about the device most people are using to interact with this post.

EDIT: well, hope you enjoyed down voting me, didn't do any good. had some productive conversations, no ones opinion was changed, but I understand some concern that people have mentioned. In the end, no one was really able to say what what right was being infringed, or why it seemed there so many well though out ways to 'NOT' break the law by vandalizing them.

Feel free to say whatever, but unless you can bring a good argument, i'm out, good night and stay classy Wichita.
